Hello: I have been away for awhile, but I couldn't help but notice there has been alot of mis-information about Mexico on this forum lately. I am not getting on anyones back here, but please stick to your areas of expertise. The only person who seems to have ANY knowledge whatsoever about Mexico is Jeff S.

As one who is married to a beautiful Mexicana, living and working in a small town in the los Altos region of Jalisco, I know of what I speak.

Mexico exists on many planes, and these planes are determined by economic class. The Chicano culture in the USA is confused by many there as being the Mexican culture. Nothing could be further from the truth! The mainstream (middle to upper class) Mexican culture here resembles that in Argentina. In other words, it is closely related to Europe in fashion, tastes and sensibilities. These are Mexicans you would only see in the USA on vacations or to study at a university. Many of the Mexicans in the USA are Indians, who have no education or opportunity in Mexico. They are in the USA to better their lives, and bring many of their cultures with them. Some may not even speak Spanish!

The stereotypes about Chicanos in the USA cause people to think all of Mexico is like that. Mainstream Mexican culture despises Chicano culture, as it stereotypes them. The politicos in power here will use the Chicanos in the USA for political purposes, but that is all they will do.

There are many differant immigrant groups represented here. Spanish (the mother country of course), French, Japanese, Chinese, Jewish, Italian, Lebanese, Dutch (my wife has Dutch great grandparents who settled in Aguascalientes) and Korean. These groups have assimilated for the most part into mainstream society.

The region where I live, los Altos de Jalisco, is renowned for having the most beautiful women in Mexico. The descendants of these people were from Galicia (in northern Spain, populated by Celts) and France. This means that tall, curvaceous, natural blonde, blue/green eyes (gueras) are more the rule here than the exception. These girls are beautiful, educated, have no visa problems, very conservative, from good families, internet savvy and like to have fun. When I walk in the park here, they practice their english on me, whistle at me and make a 42 year old man feel pretty good! I could have married any one of them, but more on that later. I will say however, I never once felt the need to look at girls from lower economic classes. I never wanted too, as the upper class girls were very responsive to me.

I hope this clears up some of the mis-information about Mexico and Mexicana's. I will continue to post here when I deem necessary to tell the truth about Mexico.

One more thing; I know some of you in the past have stated 'where are the agency photos?'. Well, I am in no way connected or have never used an agency. I did it all on my own. There is very little agency activity here, only one in Guadalajara. I represent the faction of 'do it your-selfers', so please, don't bring agencies into this once again.

I have posted many photos of our life here in Mexico. Go to my profile and find the url to my webshots site.

Saludos desde Arandas, Randy

I have traveled and lived in many latin countries. Your points are well taken. What many of us estrajeros see is not what is the essence of the culture. You have to dig much deeper and travel to the whole country to know the composite of that nation. That's the same as a foreigner who only visits NY and thinks that's the way all of American is.

While I have traveled less to Mexico than most of the LA spots, I am always looking for more info on every country in that region. You have opened my eyes to new possibilities and I thank you for that. While I love Colombia, I clearly understand that the underpinning for my affection for Colombia is that it is a "Latin" culture. Most LA countries share a core of that culture which lures many of us there.

I would like to know more of your location, if you would be so kind as to send me your email address.

Hasta luego.

I'm surprised you left out of the Germans who have touched Mexican culture the most deeply of all the groups with their importation of beer making (Dos Xquis, Tecate, etc.)  and accordions used frequently in Mexican music

You are right. Actually, I had to write this post twice, as an explorer error deleted the first post, which mentioned Germans. Germans seemed to have quite a prescence in Sinaloa. I know a few folks from there, and they have German surnames. The girls are known for their beauty, and especially for being tall. But there are Mexicans of German descent throughout Mexico also...

Another thing you must also realize Randy is some of the guys on this board do not want a girl who is of European decent. Many guys prefer the darker skinned girls, which are readily available in Colombia. Also many of the guys on this board are African American, I am not, but I know many of the girls in Jalisco can be very racist toward darker skinned people, indian or African American. I know this personally from all the people I have met in Jalisco and also people from Jalisco who live here. My novia is not racist but many people in her family are and many of her friends are. This is just a word of caution before everybody starts flying down there. I am sure you are whistled at by girls down there, because any guy with blue eyes and caucasion is a saught after status symbol by the women down there because they want to have children with blue eyes.

The company here pays my rent, I don't. Two bedrooms, wooden floors, modern new place.

And, I didn't get this job through affirmative action.

Aaron,
Great to hear that you did so well in school, I did myself and many others here as well. History shows us that 1. White Europeans came from Spain and Brazil. 2. Traded spices, gold, and other valuables (mostly,99% stolen from the Indians) from Spain and Portugal with winning African Tribes for the losers of war in Africa (slaves) 3. After the Spaniards/Portugese dissemated the Indian population they reproduced with the slaves. 4.That is why they have people of color in Latin America. (First one in Puerto Rico was Jose Garrdio) 5. Is it right, Hell no, yet white skin is a staus symbol in Latin America and is viewed upon as superior. As you see, slavery in Latin America was abolished after the USA did it (Puerto Rico,March 22, 1873 ). Yet after this, slaves had to "work for three more years and owners were compensated  35 million pesetas for each slave.  Go to any modern day Latin American country and find me 1 black. Look at the most recent census results and almost 90% of Puerto Ricans checked the white box, not even hispanic.  In Mexico we have the 6'6 Vicente Fox, white and from a german backround, Puerto Rico, Sila Caldron, white female, govenor, Pastrana and now President Uribe in your favorite country, Colombia, white, Lagos, Chile, white male, Mejia, Dominican Republic, white, Rodriguez, Costa Rica, white and as you can see the history follows the same pattern. In communist Cuba, we have Fidel, white, parents from Spain, Raul, his pleasant brother, same color. Haitians getting abused in MODERN DAY Dominican Republic. Are there many blacks in Cuba, yes, do they work in tourism or goverment, no. What MCK said is not pleasant, yet it is true in Latin America. I can understand your discourse the subject, yet do not hammer the guy for stating the facts. The worse genocide in the hsitory of mankind happened in the Carribean, starting with Colombus and following with Juan Ponce De Leon, the Spaniards, wiped out a WHOLE race of Taino Indians in under 70 years (Puerto Rico and DR). Hilter killed more, yet there are Jews, we have never seen Taino indians again after the mid 1500s. Just my 2 cents from going to school in PR, and living there, knowing what goes on in LA, by living, not blowing smoke up..... Please know before you speak and stop jumping all over guys here. Quit whining about your color and how hard it was for you, there is a kid from Miami that is going to Harvard, he escaped communist Cuba with his family, and did not speak english 7 years ago, learned it from watching TV in a aprtment of 10 people. Be grateful for what you have and where you are pal, it is a hell of a lot worse outside these borders. Again, it is wrong, yet that is the way the things are there.

I don't care what color a person is. It's totally immaterial for me what color a person is.

Yes, I know the history. But, I can't hate any group of people based upon their skin color because what happened in the past.

That kind of hate will only hurt me in return.

For me, it's about humanity. I don't want to see the same tragedies repeat for any group of people because these are crimes against the whole human race.

MCK,

Are you speaking for 99% of the women from there, or maybe 85%; no, how about 75% ?

Personally, I like lighter skinned women. And I am African American.

Colombia has plenty of women of all colors.

Second of all, MCK, in my family there in the USA, my great grandmother was full blooded Irish. She married a man as dark as night !!!!!!!  That's on my mother's side.

On my father's side, my father is one quarter native American Indian.

I have so much indian blood in me that I can claim residence on Indian reservations, not be required to pay US taxes, and receive free tuition for the university.

My point is, who gives a heck what color a person is HuhHuh?

What I appreciate in Colombia the most is with the mixture of races.

Secondly, well I am sorry if your girl is so racist, and that her father is a crook.

I couldn't ever date or be with a girl who's racist against anyone, no matter what color she is, even if she was African American.

I consider racism just totally ignorant, and it shows a lack of humanity, understanding, and education.

MCK, yes, I'm African American, and let me shock you with this; I grew up in an upper middle class conservative white community. I was the only BLACK in elementry school, junior high school, and high school. In the university, I was the only BLACK in my courses, and graduating class.

I scored at the top, 4.0 all the way through undergrad.

For grad school, the university paid me to study, and gave me a few perks on the side...=0)

Work, I work with a group of international people. Mostly all Europeans, and some Asians.

When we work together, my co-workers are interested in my perspective about different ethnic groups, especially African Americans and Africans.

We work together to try to make the world a better place for all people regardless of what country they come from, or what color they are.

MCK, I think you need to grow up, and get a life. Another thing, you really need to quit comparing Colombia with Mexico, Colombianas verses Mejicanas.

It's a stupid comparison.

you are totally missing the point, people in mexico are racist pure and simple 99%. I can't change this and what does this have to do with you just because you are african american is that it? I am not racist nor is my novia. If you want to do something about it fly to Guadalajara and change it buddy. I was just stating the facts and you change the subject, maybe your the one that needs to grow up.

MCK, also robbysanjuan, you bring good points about the various hidden notions about color of skin in Latin America but after reading this post from Aaron, I could not have said it any better. Yes the lighter skin=success in Latin America does exists but..... this is becoming less and less of importance. Colombia along with Brazil and Venezuela have the most DIVERSE people in all of Latin America, Mexico doen't even come close either Native American or Mestizos, very few 100% pure Europeans or as they like to be called "criollos". I believe that is why people love Colombia because of so many different mixtures of peoples--its intoxicating...also Brazil (but maybe amricans can identify with spanish more than portugese) also Venezuela (but many Venezuealans have to extra financial need to migrate to U.S. however this is changing.....P.S. I accompany my friend to a modeling/photo interview and they are considering her for some local advertising--she is half Haitian and half black..looks like Francy...from Jaimie Fox show....needless to say the tall blonde blue eye girls also waiting for an interview were shocked...lol...proves the world is infatuated with all people......--Colman

... in response to The truth will set you free, posted by colman on Jul 4, 2002

Hello Colman:

If you read my post below, 'believe me, this is...REAL MEXICO', you read that white=elite is not always true in this day and age in Mexico.

Mexico attracts immigrants from around the world. There have been waves of succesive immigrations from Europe at times of upheaval there. There has been heavy immigration from Asian countries. There arevery beautiful and sexy second and third generation japanese-mexican girls in Guadalajara, and they only speak spanish. Over 1,000,000 Koreans have immigated here in recent years. Mexico is alot more diverse than one would expect.

There has been a lot of immigration from Cuba also in the last forty years, and their influences can be seen even here in this small town, where some beautiful Cubanas have opened a restaurant called 'Cuba Libre'.

I don't know why there is such a lack of concise information about Mexico. I guess it is just that folks in the USA tend to believe that the Mexicans they see there (Chicanos) are representative of the whole ethnic makeup of Mexico. I used to be guilty of this, until I came and learned the real truth...

Saludos desde los Altos...

There would be alot of things that surprise you down south.. off course you have many trips down south so you would know. I have been to Peru I know I know its not ummmm Columbia, I mean Colombia but down there people of darker color are treated differently and that does include blacks, indians ect. People of lighter color get the better jobs.Have you ever watch several shows they produce in Colombia? the ones that poke fun at the local indians that live down there? I consider that very racist but they don't.
On MCK I would not bother with him he is setting himself up for failure he has never listened to anyone here anyway. I am justing waiting for the cops show on Saturday night one of these days to show MCK and his wife getting busted for drugs.
