... in response to Medellin, posted by bluto on Jul 9, 2002Medellin is the capital of the departarment of Antioquia. In 1964-1965 or so Antoquia also included the juxtoposed current departments of Risaralda (capital is Pereira), Caldas (capital is Manizales), and Quindio (capital is Armenia). Although my mother and her side of the family are from Pereira, they all considers themselves Antoquinos....you see blut Medellin, Antoquia has always signified and represented the true Colombian spirit. I believe in some instances more so than the "rollos" of Bogota. Antioquinos are known for being hard working, drifty, freedom loving, beautiful, intelligent people. Antioquia department has that small town jundra but also is accepting of change, of industry of setting the bar for other Colombian regions or cities. Bluto although I plan on traveling to the coast for possible relationships, the Antioquia region should not be overlooked. These women are truely known for being great wives. Let me see as far as food or culture well Medellin is known for creating the ubiquitous arepa and its national dish is "el plato montanero" is dish consisting of Colombian country fresh suasage, chicharon (deep fried pork rinds with meat) tostones and tajadas, rice, beans (the Antioquinos like to pronounce it frisoles instead of frijoles)these beans contain speacial spices, onions, bacon, and bits of plantano (plantain), a fried egg on top, a large slice of avocado, finally fresh coffee and aguapanela (basically boiled water with natural brown sugar) with buneulos. Also after Holland, Colombia ranks as the largest exporter of flowers. Medellin is loaded with the best variety. Orquidias, orchids is there speacialty and have inspsired its share of poems and songs. The music is varied as well, although my favorite Colombian romantic song is "Pueblito Veijo". If you Bluto or anybody else to ever travel to Medellin please dont miss Pueblito Viejo. This is a squared section where they have preserve a few homes and shops as it looked from 100-150 years ago---really unbelievable how well preserved it is. Medellin did have the Pablo Escobars in its height but I believe Medellin has preserved its traditons and continues to be an overlooked city. Yes its true men traveling to Medellin will be surprised to realize their enemy will be pride. Many people from Medellin are ferociosly proud of their city and find it hard to emigrate. Well bluto I hope I have provided you with some good bits of info. P.S. HEY EVERYONE!!!!no joke we all know many Latin women are beautiful and voluptuos but you know what? Many Colombian men and women may not tell you but amongst themselves they agree and elect "Manizales" as a city with the best overall beauty that captures the Colombian women...I am dumbfounded as to why people do not seek this city..it may be because it does not have the agency infrastructure of Cali or Bogota but if you do speak fair Spanish I truely recommend it. Manizales is almost crime free and welcomes foreigners----Colman
