I did a little looking around... Hilton's e-mail address is microtek@sbcglobal.net. I was kinda wondering if microtek was the name of his suppose company? No such company in Joplin Missouri. If it was a big software company it would be on the net I would think.
Now a couple of other question that I am confused about.... email-- Well .. I believe it's time... Show time baby 02/09
I will be in Cali six months..

email-- Bro Diablo 02/10
I won't be in Bogota(laughing)

All you guys have to do is check all of hilton's old post. He is pulling the wool over someone's eyes...

I honestly suspect that Hilton is not in Colombia. But, I could be wrong. Who knows???

And, if I'm wrong, please correct me. And I will apologize.

Posted by hilton (registered user) on 04/20 Even though I went through 14 foster homes between the ages of 4 and 17, my social worker made sure that my grandmother, who was too old to take care of me(according to the social worker), made darn sure that I was partly influenced by church. ----------------------------------Posted by hilton (registered user) on 11/26..  [Archive 67]I just finished talking with my father about 15 minutes ago. Hi lives in Kansas(Emporia). He was on call, in the Radiology department, in case one of the technicians needed an x-ray, MRI, or CAT Scan to be read....We were discussing the fact that when he married my mother, she was very traditional in her thinking. And, to this day, she's still very traditional in her thinking, but she just blends in today technology to help her along the way. She still cooks for my father daily, even when the kids are not around. ----------------------------------Posted by hilton (anonymous user) on 11/22.  [Archive 66]access server adsl-65-65-225-188.dsl.spfdmo.swbell.net IP address 65.65.225.188My father is a medical doctor(a radiologist who reads x-rays, CAT Scans, etc...). He's a big advocate of finding a 'real' wife. Back in the day, when he just got out of residency from St. Lukes hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, he was lonely and wanted a wife. Back then, it was alot easier to find a 'good' wife. But, the story is different today. ==================================

Guys,I suppose one could construct a scenario where a happily married doctors child spends 13 years in 14 foster care homes. However, I'm always suspicious of people who insist on telling their whole life story--especially when it contains inconsistencies.NW Jim

All of Hilton's posts come from the same DSL service in Missouri, but I do remember him saying in one of his earliest posts from Colombia that he was able to connect to his DSL service. Maybe he's got a modem on a PC in his home that he dials into which routes him through his DSL connection to the internet.  He did mention that he's in the software business.  I could set something like that up with a Linux box, so he probably could too.

And I've also found that using internet cafes in other countries would not allow you to do any work if your business requires ftp, ssh, or telnet access.  Every place I've ever tried limits you to http (i.e. web browsing).  Anyone wanting to do any real work that requires transfering files or accessing any servers would have to have a way into the internet other than internet cafes. It all sounds plausible to me.  I'd say give him the benefit of the doubt.

The old saying:

"When you hear hoofbeats, don't look for zebras... look for horses" applies here...

Yeah... he COULD have set up a Linux box to dial into -- BUT WHY???

Getting a temporary internet accss in most countries is easy. When I was in Brazil, I had a T1 connection with no trouble at all, and it gave me full access to everything.

It would cost a fortune to modem back home to connect. It cost me almost nothing to get T1 access when you accounted for the currency exchange.

Anyone who was going to be out of the country for any length of time would set up an account locally somewhere.

My guess is that we won't hear from Hilton again...

And if we do... it's going to be a whopper of a story to explain all of this...

But hey... if he is such a software Whiz, and takes his laptop to a GYM... he MUST have a digital camera, right?

We should get offers to see some pictures of him with the natives, I would think. I have them from my trip to Brazil... and I'm not even a "whiz" ... just your good old fashioned geek...

I don't know if I'd agree.  If you're in one place for a long time getting an internet connection would make sense, but I believe Hilton is moving around a lot.  If I remember correctly, he said he was going to be in something like 8 cities over a 20 week span.

How much did it cost you to get a T1 connection?  Those are several hundred per month up here and there's usually installation fees.  If someone was staying in hotels instead of an apartment, I'd say that would not be possible.  I agree that dailing in via an international call would be quite expensive, but it might be cheaper than finding an apartment and getting access set up in each of 8 cities, especially if you're only staying a couple of weeks in each city.  The logistics of setting up 8 apartments with internet access would be a nightmare.  You'd probably be spending most of your time just waiting for the installation.  I still think his story sounds plausible and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

But my hotel had an internet connection in the lobby.

I was two blocks away from an internet cafe, where T1 lines were bountiful.

The Intercontinental hotel had T1 lines in every room.

The Magazine store / Kiosks sold prepaid internet cards with a local dial-up number. (BTW, this was also true in St. Petersburg Russia!)

On the other hand... do you want to know what a long distance phone call from Brazil would have cost me??? I think I spoke to someone for one hour and it ran $150...

There's no doubt how I'd be getting on the internet...

Again... I wasn't in Cali. I can't speak for Colombia.

But in Brazil, Russia, or Ukraine... I could get a good internet connection cheaply. Without having to go to the heroic lengths you are describing...

I have to believe that Cali has internet cafes...

And none of the three I tried had anything available other than web surfing.  No ftp, no telnet, ssh, etc.  All I could do was surf the web in them.  I was unable to do many of the things I regularly do from home.  Unless you can simply use their connection and plug your own laptop into the internet from one of these locations, you'd be unable to do any real work.  I never asked any of them if I could bring in a laptop and connect it since I didn't have one with me.

Of course, I was there for work, so I did have my laptop.

I regularly hook up, get a valid ID from the DNS server, and away I go. Pull down my email from my Pop server... PTP connect to my company's secure server to fill out time cards... everything... I do it all the time. I even conducted a Webinar while I was in Sao Paulo.

Of course... come to think of it, I had my laptop in St. Petersburg, too... sheesh... guess my "Geek Stripes" are showing... (I used a dial-up in St. Pb... not nearly as fun!)

However.... it should be noted that Hilton does indeed have his laptop, since he used it to translate his conversation with the woman at the Gym...
Right...Huh
