Every Sunday night in the small towns of Los Altos, the plazas come alive. Single girls and boys arrive there to meet each other. The girls arrive differant ways; 'rancheritas' arrive from the countryside in the back of a pickup. Most of the town girls arrive just by walking. The girls from the expensive parts of town arrive in new Jettas or daddys BMW, Mercedes or Suburban. Some of the most beautiful women in the world, dressed to the nines, come here to walk and possibly meet a future suitor. A band plays while the plaza fills to overflowing with hundreds of tall, gorgeous gueras (natural blondes), morena claras and morenas, some with blue eyes. It is truly a sight to behold! This goes on until about ten o'clock, then the police send everyone home. If a boy sees a girl he likes, he either throws confetti on her head or asks her if he can walk her home. A rather refreshingly innocent way of meeting...

Of course, all of this is under significant pressure from the mainstream popular culture in Mexico. Discos, even the one or two in this small town, are drawing more and more young people away from the plaza. In Guadalajara, the malls have replaced the plazas as meeting places for singles, as have the discos. Now, granted, these are not the bump and grind discos we have in the USA, as most nice girls find the bumping and grinding of Gringo tourists in places like PV, Mazatlan and Cabo 'grosero'. But, as a man of forty in Guadalajara on a saturday night at the Centro Magno mall, I was inundated with interest from beautiful chiquitas from good families.

On my first date with my future wife two years ago in Guadalajara, she mentioned the fact that I could find a young girl in the small towns of Los Altos. She thought I was like the typical Gringo trophy wife hunter (at the time, my wife was 34) and wanted a chiquita. Later, she said my cousin, who is 55 and divorced (in very good shape nonetheless) could visit and probably find a nice, beautiful girl just by showing up! There are a multitude of possibilities in Mexico, especially for someone living in the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, as you are only a few hours drive from Chihuahua, where some of the tallest and prettiest girls in Mexico are...Alteno

It does sound very quaint...

Just curious...

Do Gringos ever show up at these functions?

At the very least... would you have to be fluent in Spanish to meet a lady there?

Actually, I had a more basic question when I first read this.  I don't know Los Altos, but in small towns in the Midwestern US and Central California strangers tend to stand out.  I would think that this would hamper a Gringo's effectiveness unless he both:
1) speaks Spanish well (which ought to be a goal for most of us on this board anyhow) and
2) he has the type of personality that's suited for cold-call sales.
Not to knock Randy's post.  I tend to think that agencies are like embassies--they're in the country but not really part of it.  I always appreciate reading posts from Gringos in Latin America who've gotten well away from the agencies.
