Just curious if anyone has heard from Pack?  He mentioned he was thinking of coming to meet a woman that lived not far from the city I am living in in Brazil.

I'm up in Belem, where I've been finally getting settled in.  We are getting along great and just relaxing and enjoying life right now.  I'd like to make a report about DCF here, since they have an embassy(consulate?), but with all the rushing around before I left, I did not discover I did not have a copy of my birth certificate until the last minute.  So, I'm waiting to get that sent.

It has, of course, been an adjustment to stop in the middle of your life, put everything in storage, and relocate to another country.  The biggest stresses to me, since I'm a worrier, are all the places that the respective governments get into the middle of your life.  It will be a huge relief to get all of that done and get them out of our lives.

The climate is a bit much at times, but nothing unexpected from living on the Amazon.  Since it's rainy season, usually in the afternoon it will pour down rain and cool things down a little.

I'll try to get more of a trip report style post out at some point.  It's an interesting city.

Good to hear from you, and I hope things continue to go well for you.

It's not rainy all the time, but the temperature is about the same all year round, since it's so close to the equator.  There's a rainy season from December until April, where you will get intermittent showers almost every day, then it dries out.  The city is about a million people, and there are many small towns and farms around so if you travel somewhere by road you will likely see developed land.  If you travel on the river, you'll likely see jungle with the occasional wood fisherman's house.

I don't know whether you posted about this already Hap in Brazil but what type of work are you going to do down there? If you are going to work how hard is it to find work for an American if I were to decide to live in Brazil to get to know a women better?

I had money saved up for graduate school, and I've been using that.  Since I entered the country on a tourist visa, I'm not allowed to work until after we get married and I am issued a different visa.  The inital expenses were travel, double rent, and one time purchases, but now that those are out of the way, our expenses for two are about R$1,500 which is around $600US. After I get a different visa status, it will really depend on how long will seem the US government needs to issue her visa.  I hear things like within a month, second hand, from message boards, but I also see things like a year or year and a half being written.  If it seems like it will be an extended period, we will probably try to do some side business, like translation which would be by the document and we could easily wrap things up when we are ready to go.  Before I came down here, I had thought to approach one of the companies that I used to work for about doing some software development while I am here (they have other workers that work remotely), but the internet connection I have really doesn't support the volume of things I'd need to send back and forth.

It's been a great experience to have this chance to work out our initial living together adjustment without having to worry about her adjustment to another culture.  Also, I think it makes a nicer transition for her friends and family and gives them a better sense of who I am, rather than some guy that they only met once or twice.

Still, if I could make my own perfect world, the US government would not be allowed to interfere in relationships for non citizens (to citizens) any more than they do for citizens.  This has been probably the biggest negative to me in the process.

Thanks for the info. I think I would have more trouble to find a job in Brazil because I'm in Data-Telecommunications which they probably already have enough workers. I think it would be easier for a businessman than a construction worker.

Your right about family getting to know you better especially the mother. Some of these cross-culture relationships must get hard when she will be living in America. If she calls home to her mother in fustration at least her mother will console her in a way that will help both of you. If your mother in law doesn't know you well than maybe she will be more nervous for her daughter.

In spite of all the hassles getting here and getting set up, I really enjoy that we are together.  It's been a real natural and peaceful time together, nothing at all like some of the bizarre nightmare stories you read sometimes.  If you don't mind, send me an email so I'll have your address in case you decide to come down here.  Just out of curiosity, what's the small town?

Pack's been away ruminating the process and attending to the income question but he'll be back soon.

The requirement is a percentage, like 125% or so of the poverty level in the area you live. Its very low, like $13,000 a year.If you don't make that your in big trouble
bringing a bride here. However I do know guys who are self employed who make lots of money but their tax returns don't say so.
