Another plane just went down here. It was an American Airlines Airbus (Flight 587) heading to Santo Domingo, D.R. There are no reports of casulties, but this city is on "lock down." ALL area airports are closed. I'll let you know of any further devlopments. BE SAFE!!!

My wife is Dominican and was a wreck yesterday. So far she doesn't know of any friends or family on the flight. I actually knew two of the passengers. I didn't know them very well, but they were guys I met while helping a friend with his business down there. In fact my buddy was supposed to be on the flight, but decided not to go.

And wait for all the info regarding this tragedy to come forward. I can understand your concern about safety. We all can! Just don't rush to cancel or postpone this adventure. I've used the Airbus jet many times, without any problems. You have some time, just chill for a few. We're here, if you need to rap on or off the board...

Peace....Hoda

Master Hoda, THANKS! Besides, I need to get away from the lunacy (known as my job) for a while, anyway. PEACE.

Keith,

Where was the plane leaving from? Was it going to stop in Miami?

Aaron, the plane had left from JFK shortly after 9:00 A.M.   The plane was a Airbus 300. This particular plane has a good safety record according to the news media. It should have gone non-stop from JFK to Santo Domingo (a three hour flight). It has been said that this could have been the result of a mechanical problem or (GOD FORBID) sabotage. Because of this, I'm worried. I really don't want to cancel my plans for next weekend. But if I have to, I will. PEACE.

i suggest for all of us to keep calm and not jump into any conclussions. i know how u must feel about cancelling plans since im leaving for medellin the 23 to get married. tell u the truth i must be highly convinced that i would really be in danger for me to postpone this trip. the way i see it we take our chances every time we hop into our cars. "lo que sera, sera"

peace to u also

John Paul,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Even though my engagement is to a lady from near to Bogota, Medellin has a very warm place in my heart. Compared to Bogota Medellin has wonderful character. I'm glad to hear of a successful match on this board from Medellin. Food from Antioquia, in particular, is fabulous!

Best of luck to you and your bride.

As I mentioned, I really don't want to cancel my plans. You see, I'm going to Cali on Nov. 23. But I do have a concern. I would be lying if I said I was NOT concerned. At this point, we still don't know what happened. Worried? Yes. Extremely paranoid? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!  By the way, I'm pleased to hear you're getting married (in Medellin). Congrats to you and your lady. I hope you will have a wonderful future together. Take care.

Keith,
We don't know what happened with this plane yet,but unless it points to a massive plan to attack airplanes,I would not be concearned about traveling. We are flying American Airlines to Cali on 12/11 and I'm not concearned about it.Remember airline travel is many times safer than getting in your car.Approximately 100 people a day die in car accidents in the US.Normally only once a year or so will we see a plane wreck killing 200 people or so.We take many risks just living, air travel is one of the smallest but most dramatic when a crash happens.
Actually I am taking heart that we seem to be realising that the world does not stop because a few bad things happen. In this present situation most of us are at no risk at all.

Pete,

Good points. We shouldn't be overly alarmed. And you're right, we don't know if it was due to terrorism. However, maybe you want to consider these two details.

1.) On Sept. 11th, 2 of the 4 planes were from AA.

2.) The accidents occurred around 9:00 a.m., which is within the same time frame for today's crash.

I see a possible pattern here with the timing and the airline carriers of the incidents. What do you think?

If I was from NY, and I needed to fly, I wouldn't be flying from any airport in NY or Newark right now. Especially, for AA flights at around 9:00 a.m..

What do you think? Just mentioning some precautions.

well they have been telling us to be on alert and that something was about to happen. however, they are also saying it looks more like a mechanical problem than a terrorist action. lets all just wait a few days till we get all the facts. Hodas right dont let this stop yuo guys from your travel south...dont let the bas---ds win!

The other thing to consider is that there's lots of guys concerned about flying now and also many who are probably thinking it's going to be much more difficult to immigrate a woman after 911.  That means less competition for the ladies for those men who do go and maybe lowering prices at agencies as business drops off and competition for the dwindling number of gringo clients heats up.
