Okay I have seen these terms used several times and can not find any definate information here or other places.

My wife and I married in Columbia and did a DCF for her Visa. When we came into Miami the guy told me that this was all I needed to get a Social Security Card for her.  I applied for the Social Security with nothing more than her Visa stamp in her passport and expect to receive it within the next 2 weeks. She arrived in July so we expect her temporary permanent green card to arrive 6 - 9 months from then according to the Immigration guy in Miami.  Her visa was stamped as Authorized for Work.

QUESTION: My understanding was all that she needs to work in this country is the Social Security card is this true or not?

I have also seen the term Advance Parole and understand it to mean the ability to leave and reenter the country.  We were told by the Immigration officer in Miami that her passport stamp was all that she needed.  We plan to go to Columbia for Christmas.

QUESTION: Do you have to have some other form of permission to leave and reenter the country?

We received her social security card yesterday!!! It does not indicate additional authorization required to work. I think that is for a K-1 Visa until you get married and the status is adjusted.

Do you think your lady will become induced by the sirens of the AW's while she is at work? Did you know that most couples who marry meet at school or work?

Oh god i hope not, i know several AW who are so B i t c h y. I dont want my wife to work the first couple months here until she gets settled in. I know though once she starts working she will make friends. And I know how some women can leech on as friends and start stiring things up. Ugggggg I just hope she makes some good friends with the right people. ..

That's correct, in fact, if you ask around you will find out that the majority of affairs are with somebody from work. I was told by my wonderfull female family members that they would "teach my new wife the ropes", you get my drift. I think my wife will stay home, or work for the church as a volunteer (she is a hospice nurse)

... in response to Advance Parole and Work Authorization, posted by DallasTexas on Aug 1, 2001

They gave my wife a social security card with a message on it that says something like "Valid for work with INS authorization".  The INS put a stamp in her passport that says she can work in the US and re-enter the US for 1 year.  She is supposed to receive the green card within 6 months.  The green card will supercede the stamp in the passport when it arrives.
She can work by showing the social security card and the stamp in her passport (or green card).  She can re-enter the country by showing the stamp in the passport (or green card).  The INS agent said the stamp may raise some questions when she passes through immigration on the way back to the US.  The agent said that if she has the green card there are no questions asked.

The stamp that she has in her passport says that she is authorized to work and that she is being processed for I-551. I called the National INS number and they told me she does not need anything else to work here. I guess I will just have to wait and see if the social security card that she receives has that statement about working with authorization from the INS.

I tried to get a job when I was waiting for my SSN and showed potential employers my EAD Card only and they told me that wasn't enough I needed a SSN.

I think I confused people with the way I explained this.

I know she needs a social security card first. It is the law in Texas that you have not just the number but you have to show the card itself here (and most employers make a copy of it and your drivers license or other ID).

She should have her social security card in 2 weeks or so.

I will have to see if it has the additional statement about INS permission to work is needed. I thought it would come and she would be ready to go without any other hassles or statement or additional stuff to do.

I don't understand why the INS would stamp a passport authorized to work.  Then require additional authorization to work as the other poster stated.  I wonder if that was a total different type of VISA and that is why?

My wife arrived on a K-1 visa, but she was not authorized to work.  The passport stamp occurred several months later after we married and we applied for her residency.  We had an interview in the INS office and the INS agent stamped her passport at the same time that he granted her conditional residency (2-year probabtion period).

Okay this may be the major difference. My wife came in on a spouse visa.  That would make sense I guess you can't work on a K-1 only once you get married and have your status adjusted.  My wife should get her card in 2 weeks and I won't have to guess! Thanks.

The INS may be right, but then again, I'll bet a lot of employers won't believe she's legit if she doesn't have a Social Security card.  Anyway, she's got nothing to lose by trying if she's ready to look for a job.

Good Luck
