My wife has all of her documents now and would like to work here. She was an Oral Hygenist in Columbia which took six years of college with 8 years of work experience.  They will not accept her qualifications here.

She is enrolled in the local college for English classes at the end of this month for a series of eight (Cool, one (1) month classes.  At the end of these classes the college indicated she would have English skills necessary to be competative in the job market or to go back to school here to be recertified for her previous job (which would take an additional 2 years here).

I have done some preliminary searches on the NET for jobs for Spanish speakers but most indicate that Spanish is a requirement but do not reflect how much English is required.

I have looked in the usual places like Dallas Morning News classified ads, etc.  I also understand that their are Spanish Temp Agencies here that deal strictly in placing Spanish speaking temps which might also be a good way to find a job.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, Gene. Sure, I can help. How good is your wife's English (there WILL be a formal oral and written test). If her English is up to snuff (I'd say at least 7 on a 10 scale) I know where she can get a job for $13.xx starting as soon as tomorrow afternoon: City of Dallas emergency 911 phone operator. Call 311 and ask for employment opportunities and/or ask for Chief Gamez of the Fire Department, he's in charge of hiring the bi-lingual phone operators.

English skills aside, not everyone can handle the stress and mental anguish (fires, car wrecks, heart attacks, domestic violence, drug over dose etc., the list could go on) of this type of work, but if she can handle it and her English is pretty good, like I say, she could be employed ASAP, because they're short in that need and they are hiring right now.

Never having met your wife, I don't konw how good her English is. If it's still isn't that good, not to worry, by the time she ompletes the courses, the Fire Department willl probably still be hiring for this position.

My wife is a dentist in Peru. I even had her fix a cavity for me while i was there Smiley,  So, I been studying that very problem about license for foreign trained dentists. I went to site I think you will find helpfull ... http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/newdent/student/index.html

this site at the American Dental Association explains in depth about someone immigrating here and wants to be a dentist (or hygenist). Basicly when its all said and done, to be a dentist or hygenist in the US you have to go school here. As I think you already know that....but, some colleges will give you advance standing and you only have to go college 2 years instead of the full 4 years. (and yes she will of course need to be know English well enough to pass the TOFEL and even more so the classes are all in English of course) Depending on some colleges, some make you go back through it all again including the basics. Also most colleges i think will require her to take the DAT (Dental Admission Test which all dental students must take)The states (ie the State Dentistry Board of each state) governs who gets a license and what is required.(im sure the ADA put their two cents in though) I found in California to be exception. You just take a State test that makes you demonstate you can do your job and if you pass they will approve your license for Califonia (only if you had license in another country first) but doesnt sound like it would be easy......you go to move out of state though and it all changes and find you cant work. Because, the majority of states will only license you if you have graduated from an ADA approved college. And right now that means only the USA and Canada. Everybody else is non-accredited....so still best to go to an accredited school...its all there at that site. Is great info ...laterz, Golden

I looked at some of this. Unfortunately even if she went to work for a dentist here she could not practice while going to school it would be illegal.

We have thought about the 2 more years of school thing and it is a possibility in the future but not right now.

Dallas TX-
How many dentists offices have you contacted? Here in TN. they are practically begging for hygenists, dental assistants, even receptionists, and lots of times they need one that speaks Spanish. Maybe she could offer her services as a receptionist/desk person until they know her better, then maybe allow her to work on her credentials here toward being a hygenist. If you haven't already, try the dentists offices in parts of the city with large Latin populations. I think she would have a better chance to get started there as opposed to the snooty side of town.
Like they said, be patient. Mi esposita should have her work auth. in August or Sept., she is also anxious to get started.
  Another time saving tip-
Go to the site for your large daily newspaper, to the classified/employment page. There will probably be a keyword-type search feature on the page. Type "spanish" into the search, and it will show you all current ads that ask for spanish speakers. You won't have to wade through the actual paper for hours getting eye-strain and possibly missing a good one.
   Good luck-

Golden,
What part of the state are you in? We're a little northwest of Nash. My wife is not in the dental profession but expressed some interest in it since the demand is high here. Her college training and work experience is in computers, has done a little programming and some teaching at San Ignacio de Loyola in Lima where she worked.

Near Rivergate is where im at. Is your wife here? If you guys are looking for work for her. I have an idea. I work at call center and i was just thinking, Sprint, Ford and Dell all have big customer service call centers here in Nashville. (its not sales calls) They love having people who can speak both languages, spanish and english. Just throughing an idea at you. My wife is not here yet ugggg Sad she has her interview with embassy this week so she should be here no later middle of next month. I doubt my wife will work the first couple months while she gets adjusted to here. Then i know she will take english classes to improve her english so she go college to get her license here to be a dentist.

Evan,
There are ESL classes here in our area and I guess they must be pretty good. I have many Latin immigrant customers in my work and some of them are making very quick progress with their english by using these classes. These are people who haven't had any "higher education" previously, either.

Yes, my wife is here with me, has been for a year. We are about 15 minutes from you. Click on my profile and send me an email, maybe we can hook up.
I know a Mexican guy who is taking ESL classes at Belmont University. His progress has been impressive for someone who had no prior english. Your wife might want to check it out. I think they meet twice a week, and he might have even told me that they are free, can't remember for sure. E-mail me.
