... in response to Estonia has highest HIV rate outside Afr..., posted by RickM on Sep 25, 2005

Just read where Russia had 1.6 million
abortions last year compared to 1.5 million
births. With the negative birthrate in general, the
unbelievably high abortion rate, the high death rate
for men including a life expectancy of only 55 or 58
years, and the spread of HIV, the population of Russia
is expected to shrink to only 75 million people by mid
century.

Despite their cultural emphasis on being "smart" and "strong" they still haven't figured out the relationship between sowing and reaping.

I didn't ask you what you think DavidLP.

FYI I care not to dialogue with you
so please save your arrogant, cowardly,
and irrelevant commentary for those who do.

...Hmmm, a little touchy aren't we? Not like you at all. Perhaps things aren't going so great after all. I didn't make that study up you know. Why is it you types have such a hard time swallowing reality when confronted by it? Ah well, my mistake. As you wish. Have a good time with that hunting thing and try not to break any of them there Commandments while doing it...

hehe, that's funny... my Russian teacher just recently taught me the Russian expression "shto posayish, tow e poznosh" (you'll sow what you reap).  So, clearly, some Russians somewhere understand the concept, otherwise they wouldn't have invented the saying!

As it is with many things involving people, the problem is obviously with the application of knowledge, not a lack of knowledge itself!

A lot of the Russians I know feel that the real problem is that many of the best and brightest left. Part of the problem is that life can be short and brutal over there. So they try not to worry and live life to the fullest while they can. Forget about consequences. They also don't believe that they can change anything. So why try? The nail that sticks up the highest gets hammered down. I understand the mindset even if I don't agree with it.

Shrinking population means shrinking economy. Most of Europe will see shrinking populations unless they accept immigration. A lot of Eastern europe have the same problem with the high HIV rates.
