Author Topic: RW and big old dogs that STAY inside my home.  (Read 4103 times)

Hello all,

I figured it's been kinda slow of late around these parts, so an inane (not to me) question might open up some conversation. I recall an old thread that mentioned RW and their Rotties.(now gone) Shortly after that, probably in the Moscow Times, I saw a story about a woman who was "accidentally" shot to death by a cop b/c of her animals. Her dogs were off leash, he (the officer) checked it out... the dogs attacked/defended, and she received a 9mm in the head during the ensuing melee. The verbiage in the article struck me, as very friggin' odd. Well... my question is: do RW have issues with dogs lumbering on furniture, popping up on the bed, or any darned place they desire? I know it's a very generalized question, yet some cultural inferences might be garnered from my query.

Any response would be grand, especially from the fellas married to women from the FSU who still love their mutts.

Thanks,

Vaughn

BTW... my ex was fine with my Boxer at the corner of the bed, then came the Dane... LOL

don't expect a unified reaction or answers on rather narrow areas such as this.
Russians come from a huge continent and can be very diverse, though admitedly we talk here about the mostly, or rather only, white, European kind, the one which is normally, expectedly, predictably most looked for, by the same kind, the corresponding men, here.
Though they may live in different areas before coming here, or later, to expect them to be alike in such small things is not realistic or practical.
There are areas where Russians have more similar expectations/behavior, but this one would not be one of them.

You probably expected this, and perhaps through your wording you simply expected a diversity of answers or experiences.

Vox,
I havn't a desire to generalize anything on Russian culture. I'm curious of the subject matter and the opinions of the board, because I love my animals. My Dane, "Bismarck", just finished his championship two weeks ago in Van Nuys, and has 30+ inquiries for breeding from 3 continents. Therefore, the subject is valid to me. Dennis was kind enough to explain his dog experiences with his RW, and I thank him. Dog hair isn't that bad, yet...

Dog stories guys, come on... Even dogs in the FSU. Tid-bits would be welcome...

Regards,

Vaughn

... in response to AM & their pups..., posted by BURKE89 on Sep 11, 2002

Both of the girls that I've dated in Russia love dogs. They both had large dogs that slept in their beds with them.

Girlfriend #1 was a dog trainer and had a viscous german shepard for many years. Her family hated the dog because it occasionally attacked them. Her sister showed me some nasty scars were she had been bitten. My girlfriend loved the dog because it would attack any strange man who came near her on the street. That dog suited her personality.

My current girlfriend had a large black poodle that died not long ago. I've seen pictures of this dog and I never realized before that, that poodles came that big. He was no lap dog. This girl is more even tempered and her dog was lovable. The people I met in Russia would often treat their pets better than they would other people. They really loved them. And to me it seems that they tend to like purebreds. I'm more of a mogrel collector myself.

Vaghn,
My wife had a poodle in Russia that was killed by a Pit Bull.  Very terrible story.  Here we have a Carin Terrier, that she choose.  "Boss" is a great little dog and my wife loves him dearly.  She has whipped him into quite a well behaved pet and he is truly bilingual.  LOL.

Ken,
I appreciate that info. I'm sorry to hear of your wife's dogs death. My mother's best friend takes care of abused Dane's. Many are used, in S. California, as Pit Bull bait. I can't even fathom the concept, yet it happens.
What's a Carin Terrier? How bout the couch, nice area rugs & bed for your pooch, and your wife's opinion? I've a nice French Deco rug, my "kid's" know is off limits, other than that...

American's & European's love their dogs, don't we? I hope my future RW loves the "lad's" as I do.

Thank you,

Vaughn

... in response to RW and big old dogs that STAY inside my ..., posted by BURKE89 on Sep 8, 2002

Hi Vaughn...

I will give you my thoughts on this one, as I see this board has been slow this weekend...

First, (and foremost) one could never generalize anything, about any culture.  There are different people, in every culture.  So....to put forth a question such as do RW do this, or do RW do that, it is really hard to answer...because, each person is different and they all have their own backgrounds to focus on...

I CAN tell you my personal experience with my RW.  She grew up with having a small dog in her life.  So she enjoys animals wether they be domesticated or the zoo-type ones...

I have a large dog, mixed collie/lab...that is VERY protective and territorial...she does not take to people at first...but after she sees they are ok, she warms up to them , and tries to get them to pet her head...she is spoiled..My RW loved her.  And one really good thing, was that when ever my RW wanted to go for a walk, my dog was right there ready to go with her...and yes, my dog protected her very much...I could not imagine anyone getting 10 feet from my RW before my dog would notice, and take "stand"...

So, some woman like dogs, and the ones that do...will probably have a new protector to watch out for them...

Hope this helps,
Dennis

Hey Dennis,
I appreciate your impute very much. I'd thought, I prefaced my question in a rather egalitarian fashion.(I've opinions on culture, just not RW and dogs, hence the question.) However, I noticed you spoke in a past tense. I hope your proud pup wasn't the cause of "issues". Furniture and the bed questions mate? Did/does your RW have/has an adversion to your canine jumping about where she wished to? Did/does your wife dislike your canine pals adventures? I'm simply inquisitive on the subject. I'm not throwing fire-balls on RW & my mutts! I'm trying to learn and Robert Conquest nor the Hoover Institute isn't of much help on this one.

Thanks,

Vaughn

Again, I can only speak for my personal situation....

My RW does not have a problem with my dog jumping on her(the dogs) couch, or on the bed.,...my RW likes dogs, and has had them in her life so it is no big deal for her...she ready accepts most of the stuff the dog does...

There may be some people who are not used to having dogs around the house, so they may not be comfortable with the hair, and etc etc...that comes with having a protector of the house...

Dennis,
I apoligize, for mis-interpreting the tenor of your initial post. Long live the canine and your relationship with your Russian wife.

Sorry,

Vaughn
