My wife has now been here for 8 months... we applied for Aos after we were married- sometime towards the middle of Jan.  so it has now been almost 6 months and no word from INS... no date for an interview. I am in the Florida area... does this seem normal???  any advice from the vets out there??  thanks,

Keith

Hi Keith and Katya.

Unfortunately, the Miami INS is horrible to deal with. Let me give you some advice. The only way to get anything done with them is to go down in person and wait around all day. I have written to them several times over the course of things, including registered and certified mail, which they did receive, but NEVER replied to. Fortunately, I did my AOS in person there (because of my experiences and those of others). We went down in February, and after waiting all day, we filed our AOS and our interview was scheduled for November.

The ONLY way you will get anything done with Miami INS is to go there. Their attitudes are horrible, and they routinely LOSE paperwork, so be sure to have backup copies and send no originals.

It's terrible, but that's the way it is. I guess what I am trying to tell you is: if you mailed your papers to Miami, you need to go there and waste a day (bringing with you another set of AOS documents), and be prepared if after all that they tell you they don't have your documents.

If only I lived in Palm Beach county...

Got their interview right at a year after marriage.  They said that they wrote after 10 months and shortly got their interview.  I'm sorry to say I can't tell you in what part of Florida they live.

Marina submitted her AOS petition to the Manhattan office in early January, 2001.  In September of 2001, we moved out of the "Manhattan" region, and into the "Albany (NY)" region.  INS managed to lose our file for the next 8 months or so, we needed some help from our Congressman, and the INS was even slow to respond to him.  Just last week, we finally received our interview date, now scheduled for late August, 19+ months after our original filing.  Our Congressional office tells us that Manhattan is at least one year behind, in May of 2002, they were processing AOS requests submitted in April of 2001.  In contrast, the Albany NY sub-office has been very helpful to us.

When Marina and our son's files finally arrived in Albany, most of the documents submitted originally were missing.  We had copies of everything, and the Albany people allowed us to "rebuild" the files with our copies.  Still, because of the delays, all the medicals had to be redone, two trips to the civil surgeon in Albany, physicals, bloodwork (they did require a "titer" for chicken pox), totalling almost $500.  We also had to get another "advance parole" for our travel this summer, totalling $250.  Albany gave us a free 90 day extension to Marina's work permit, planning that they would be able to ger us an interview within that period, otherwise, that would have been another $100.

In contrast, friends of ours you were able to process their case from the start in Albany, were completed in four months.
If we still lived in the Manhattan district, I cannot imagine how we would ever have successfully processed our application.  None of our inquiries to Manhattan were ever answered, our Congressman had trouble getting a response.  It is a sad situation there, I'm sure made worse by the tragedy of 9/11.

Every office is different, wherever you are, photcopy everything you submit, and save everything you receive!

We live in San Diego and got the AOS about two years ago.  What a hassle it was before getting that.  Renewing work permits and temporary drivers licenses constantly was not fun.

I hope it goes considerably faster for you.

We applied for AOS at the end of July last year, and we just got 3 weeks notice for the interview a couple days ago. Last month we got 2 days notice notice to get the fingerprints done.

Keith the time and process for the AOS varies in each INS region. It doesn't make sense that the same agency can have such great differences in time between the various offices and regions.

There are people here who have beening waiting 1.5 years. Dan just recently received his and his wait was well over a year. Other branches and regions of the INS will have your AOS to your bride with-in 60 days, and yet other offices, with-in 30 minutes of applying.

Detroit and Dallas INS offices are part of a trial in which the AOS is handed out quickly, or at least did prior 9-11. Things could have changed. In my case two days after I received our marriage certificate in the mail, we went to the local office, got in line at 5:45 in the morning and was about 250th in line. Our longest wait was just getting into the front door. Once in I paid the $220 for the one petiton that covered everything, 30 minutes later we were interviewed, 20 minutes later had her AOS and two and a half months later had her green card.

Hopefully someone from So. Florida can share with you Keith what there recent timeline was.

And Natalya to be removing those conditions - if they haven't already.

How about you Karl? Already through that phase?

Dan and Karl,

I have the form I-751 (rev. 02/01/02) in front of me now. Last week I filled out an Affidavit in Support of Petition to remove Conditions on Residence for Doc Steen's wife, Helen. Three such affidavits are requried and I was one of his three. He has given me a copy of everything he sent the INS so I am making my petition identical to his.

He mailed his petition to the INS office and says he will receive Helen's removal of conditions in the mail. I thought I would have to go wait in line and be interviewed again. Maybe it's different in other regions of the country, but I'm all for just mailing my I-751 to the INS.

...for Svetlana is Jan 22. This means that around our second anniversary in Oct, we need to file this 751 form. I was wondering how all this goes here in Dallas.

We waited awhile before we heard anything.  Can't recall if it was six months, but it was least 4.
