Before I went to Russia I bought a camcorder with a 3" LCD screen off ebay for $150.  I taped my house, the small town nearby and the larger city where the airport is.  In Russia, I didn't show the video right away because I didn't want it to dominate the conversation (but I did show photos right away so we would have something to talk about).  But on the third date I took out the camera and it was a hit.  I figured a lot of people brought camcorder video with them but my translator said she hadn't seen anyone do it.  Several of the girls in the office had a great time playing with the camera.  Just thought I would suggest this because it worked out so well for me.

Also, I work nights and live way out in the country.  Alla had said that this sounded kind of scary.  Showing her the video seemed to allay her fears. I think it was mainly just a fear of the unknown.  (It helped that I could tell her the one house next door has two policemen and their wives living there.)

And did I mention how wonderful it is to have video to watch now that we are apart?

Later,

John

The newer digital cameras will take short video clips.  The length will depend on how much memory you have in the camera.  That can be kind of cool too and you can download them to your computer or email them.

I was trying to decide whether to bring a camcorder or not because I did not want it stolen or comfiscated.  But I decided to take it.  The only trouble I had was when I burnt out the adapter using it for my iron and then the other adapters that I bought there did not work for my battery charger.  It sucks to have a video camera and a dead battery.  So I bought a new battery at the camera store but the batteries are sold uncharged.

You need to have a camcorder and play it in the TV from your own camcorder.

Any tape you make you cannot leave there

They are on the PAL system

but the VHS tapes are.
The recording format IS different, and they use the PAL format so no, a VHS tape recorded in the US (unless it was recorded in PAL format) will not play on their VCRs (and vice-versa).

... in response to VCR's are not the same..., posted by Del on Jun 30, 2002

The tapes are the same...the recording speed is what is different between the US system and thiers. My wife had a multi-speed JVC in Moscow, we watched movies that I brought with no problem. When she arrived here in US, she brought some russian dubbed movies that her son liked...but they did not work on my VCR. I noticed when I fastforwarded while viewing, the picture appeared with no sound...so I figured this speed difference due to the 220 volt versus our 110 volt we use here.
If you can find a multi-speed vcr here, you will not need to pay to have the tapes converted. Now my wife is hooked on DVD format...so I have not thought much about it anymore.

I took a video of my home and my daughter and took it with me on both trips. Every girl I met LOVED it.

I got a side benefit, too. I had a great German Shepherd when I made my first trip to St. Pb. He was in every shot of my house (He followed me from room to room trying to figure out what the heck I was doing.)

A couple months after I returned home, he contracted a strange disease and died. I actually discovered all of the footage of him much later when I was looking at the tape (after I moved) and was thinking of destroying it, since it was out of date, and just stupid footage of a rental house I no longer lived in. Oviously, I changed my mind when I saw the footage.

And... OH YES! having video of my time in Kiev has been GREAT!

BTW, you can get small tripods that fold up and fit in a suitcase rather easily... FWIW...

... in response to I completely agree, posted by MarkInTx on Jun 30, 2002

As it was this time last year that I recorded it.  Maybe I'll return in the winter and record some more memories.

While waiting for my lady friend, I'd hold my camera by my side and shoot video of people just walking by on the sidewalk - I wasn't so rude point it at them and look through the viewfinder, but just kept it in my hand by my side.  Like I was carring it.

Even still I got some LONG looks from people.  No doubt, either they're still parinoid of the past.

I was at the train station shooting videos of the trains coming and going.  Some really interesting looking trains and metros... Had a lady dispatcher/flagperson yell at me, but I just waved and smiled. (and I wasn't even recording her).

Next time, I interview women I'm going to set it up and record their answers and facial expressions/body language.

No doubt,  if everybody did this.  The girls you passed over might be someone else would be interested in.

Why more Marriage sites don't have this in a small video clip of the lady, is beyond me.

I think Bill has a good idea about video taping the events. (However, the camera may change the dynamics of the occasion.)

I look back at the pictures of my first visit to the FSU and wish I had made a different choice, walked down a different path that's no longer available to me...

Bill,
Lifetime Partners will send you videos of the women listed.  There are also other sites that offer video clips to be viewed on the Net.
