I've flown from Kiev to Simferopol and rode the train back to Keiv. The train was a nice way to wind down a wonderful month in Crimea and it stopped alot so we could get realy good eats from the local vendors. I've also been to Eugene's internet club and have only good to say about him and those who work and help out there.

I'll second this recomendation on using Eugene's services. He was our driver/guide/interpreter for our trip to Simiez, Alupka, and Yalta. He is one great guy who will really go the extra mile for you.

Thanks Del,
I have already been exchanging emails with Eugene.  Thanks for your advice it is very helpful.  I already was planning on doing Crimea by auto but your info about train over plane if going with a lady and that it is overnight all the way to Simferopol is very helpful.  I thought it was overnight to Odesa and much further to Simferopol and I was also wondering if the train from Odesa to Sevastopol would be quicker than going through Simferopol but I infer from your post that the only way to get to Sevastopol is through Simferopol.

There is no need at all to go to Odessa. And, yes the only way to Sevastopol is through Simferopol, whether by train or air.
If possible, I'd have your friend meet you in Kiev and travel back to Sevastopol with you. I've done this and it is absolutely the best way, in my opinion.
On the other hand, I've flown many times too (a couple of hours) and never felt 'unsafe'.  :-)

Yes, that is what we are going to do, even though she will be doing so much train travel, my lady wants to meet me in Kiev at the airport even though she will be taking a train from Moldova and then ride back with me all the way to Sevastopol.  It would be easier for her to meet me closer to Moldova but she wants to spend more time with me, and she insists on meeting me at the airport, and she is dying to go to the beach.  Oh, and you have also seconded her advice that we do not need to go to Odesa.  Somehow I was under the impression that it was on the way and would break up the trip.
