Aids in Ukraine

In todays International section there is an alarming new article on the Aids rate in Ukraine.   Ukraine is now the first country in Europe with 1% or more of its adult population infected with AIDS.  The focal point is Odessa both for AIDS and those who fight it.  Lucily, the majority of cases are around IV drug abusers / spauses etc., but it is moving into their general population.  If I knew how to give you the URL I would.  The article is on page A3 of the Wednesday January 23, 2002 International section.

Moscow, 28 November 2001 - A new report released today, "AIDS Epidemic Update 2001", says the number of HIV infections in Eastern Europe is rising faster than anywhere else in the world. Reported figures are largely underestimated but even so, the latest figures reveal there were more than 75,000 reported new infections in Russia by early November, a 15-fold increase in just three years.

"HIV is spreading rapidly throughout the entire Eastern European region - a quarter of a million new cases only this year," said Dr Peter Piot, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). "HIV/AIDS is unequivocally the most devastating disease we have ever faced, and it will get worse before it gets better."

If you take into consideration the age bracket of say 18-40 the percentage rises to above 3%.  It is disturbing...  abd one reason why a fiance visa requires an aids test.

This age groups represents 50% of the total population which in turn represents 82.6% of the number of reported aids cases.

If the current extent of Aids in Ukraine is 1% of the poulation then the % of this age group is .826 * 2 (1.652%)

The statistics would increase with the number of persons outside of marriage (IE Avaialable/Single women/men.)  The good stats here is that the percentage of women to men is  1:3... but the risks are high and the statistics show an alarming rate of increase in the extent of AIDS in Ukraine. (As shown in the above table)....
