Has anyone taken a course. I have to opportunity to take a adult ed. class, 15 classes, 2 1/2 hours each for $200. How much will I get out of it, how difficult will it be. I have been once to FSU last summer and am writing some women there.
Thanks in advance

The University of Houston is recommending a 16 week, 6 hours per day, 5 days a week, full immersion Russian language course for it's MBA and Law graduates. They are predicting that international finance and business with Russia is going to grow rapidly over the next decade.

If your language course is just conversational and strictly for tourism, it should be ok. Russian is very difficult to learn because the sounds of the words are very confusing for Americans. What is boils down to is this: Speaking Russian phrases is not too hard. Reading Russian is moderately difficult. Writing Russian is somewhat harder than reading. Hearing spoken Russian by native speakers in a normal conversation is extremely difficult. You haven't learned Russian until you can hear Russian speech and understand it. Women tend to speak faster than men.

Barry is right on.  I have been studying Russian for two years now.  It is the hardest thing I have ever tried to learn in my life.

If its that difficult then why try?
My goal is just to learn some conversational russian, not write it. The class size is less than 10 students and the class is on;y 4 blocks from my home.

Maybe half the women speak no English or poor English.  You can go for the other half if you speak Russian.  I've only studied some vocabulary from tapes.  It would help your wife transition to the US if she has language problems.

Because it's there. Because of respect for your wife and her culture. Because your children would benefit from growing up bi-lingual. Educated Russian parents start reading to their children in the first year. Most children in an educated Russian family can read at a second grade level by the age of 4. Remember, in Russia and Ukraine, chess is considered a sport.

Another good reason is the fact that the first year or so is going to be difficult on your RW because of culture shock. One technique that can help ease her along and enhance your marriage is by having her teach you Russian while you teach her English and getting around in America. Just because she knows some basic conversational English doesn't mean she understands English. It takes years because there is so much to learn. By learning the language, you are showing interest in her and that you care for who she is. If there is anything that I have learned on this board, it is the fact that marrying a RW/UW/EEW is not an easy thing. You have to be dedicated 100%.

There are many men on here who have not learned Russian and who are sucessfully married. It is not an absolute requirement, but it can make a difference in finding the right woman by expanding your choices to women who do not know any English.

These are the best reasons I know.

It is definitely worth learning.  By learning the language you will also learn the culture ie. how they verbally express themselves gives insights into their societal structure.  You will also be able to communicate with ladies you meet.  If you speak broken Russian and they speak broken English the two of you will communicate fine.  Even if the girl you meet speaks excellent English her friends or relatives probably will not.  They will have much more respect for you if you speak Russian.  Also, if you speak Russian you will have more confidence when you are out and about in their society.

You might be really good at learning languages.  You might be a natural at Russian.  I just happen to have a particularly hard time.  I am older and know no other language fluently other than English.

Joke:

What do you call a man who knows two languages - bilingual.
What do you call a man who knows three languages - trilingual.
What do you call a man who speaks many languages - polylingual.
what do you call a man who speaks one language - American.

So of course, learn Russian.

Understanding the language is the best defense for travellers over there. The more savvy you are, the less that some of the more unscrupulous Russians will try to take advantage of you.

I've found that having help, instead of just the tapes and books, is MUCH easier.

The easiest way to learn is with a teacher.
