But not the kind who post here.

I came across a carved doll of a Scandinavian troll (big head, pointy ears, wild hair, not a Wishnik) ferociously playing his accordian.   I thought it might be a good present for my friend in StP, who plays a pretty ferocious accordian herself.

But it got me to wondering what part trolls might have in Russian folk tales.  About an hour on the Internet turned up very little.  Loads of tales from Norway, a few more from Germany, Finland, etc., but only a few references to Russia.

Can someone provide better information from their own experience or that of their wives or girlfriends?

Trolls, goblins, and giants seem to be more prevalent in Germanic, Gaelic, and Nordic folklore.  Though Slavic ethnicity is somewhat related to Scandinavia, a cursory glance seems to show that a lot of their fables are heavily influenced by Siberian and Far Eastern myths of heroes, spirits (gods), animal spirits, and witches (Baba Yaga being the more notible).  As one writer put it, Russian folklore has no fairy tales because the folklore has no fairies (in the traditional Irish sense that we would be familiar with).

Here are a few links I found that deal with Russian folklore.

Feeling goofy, huh? Well, I posted in the same sort of mood.  I geuss I should have indicated my mood when I posted.  (sheepish grin)

Seriously, I hope Marina feels better soon.
