Translate an English phrase to Russian and then back again with several different phrases and see what you get.  The online translators fail that test misrably.  I guess you tried that already.

I can write an English phrase into the Paralink site and have it translated to English and Olya understands it just fine - more than 90 % of the time. If I do the double translation that you suggest, it is, indeed, a bunch of gibberish. That is because the better programs utilize "Machine Translation" - that is, they try to adjust for context. However, once through is all they're good for.

You simply cannot condemn the translation programs on the basis of this double-through test.

It probably is not a fair test.  I haven't heard of a translator program that works well doing a double translation.  If it was a great program I think it would at least sound similar.  I translated letters from Russian using the Prompt website and they sounded pretty strange.  It made me wonder what the lady on the other end was reading.  I guess you would have to understand both languages well to know if it was working.

I think that I meet your criteria of somebody understanding both languages very well, and from my experience the Prompt program is good, provided you keep your sentences reasonably short so the context is not lost during the translation. Having said that, the translated text does need more or less frequent editing if I want a letter to be absolutely clear. But even if you don't do that, I think generally the receiver understands the translation. As Dan suggested, maybe from 90%. By the way, the text that Spyke put in as an example can be translated by Prompt as well, in same words, if you put in correct English text (not a text that have been already translated from Russian). The exception was "kak dela?", it translated it differently but the meaning was the same.

I have learnt with time to use certain English words to obtain translated words in Russian that I wanted, but in many instances I just have to type in the word into translated text in Russian myself. But it still saves me plenty of time compared to typing the whole letter in Cyrillic myself. It is much easier and quicker for me to write a letter in English, get the translation done by Prompt and then edit the text.
