I agree with you completely about the papaya thing. Morals and ethics fly out the window when it comes to money. I've seen Colombians cheat Colombians here in the states. This sense of "take care of myself first and always" stays with some of the chicas that come up here to live. This is why I tell everyone, get to know the culture as well as the lady.
You mentioned not turning in wallets. I read an article in a Colombian paper about a small boy 8 or 9 yrs. old that found a wallet with lots of money. He and his family where very poor. He went against his society and turned over the wallet to the police. This happens so little that the boy became a hero and a college fund was set up for him to fund his education plus his mother was given a job. Colombia wants hero's but nobody wants to step forward and stand up. Tragic. It feels good to be an American.

You're going to find that in pretty much all developing nations.  People living under harsh economic conditions are always going to try to get whatever they can out of you in a business deal.

I have a suggestion about doing business in Colombia. This is based on my numerous personal experiences. Don't do business in Colombia!!! Period! The vast majority will lie, cheat and steal from you every chance they get. I must say that I have run into a few Colombians that are honest, but the vast majority are not and don't even try to be honest  I don't understand it but it's just the way it is in Colombia.
