Author Topic: Anyone know what a I-89 is ?  (Read 1899 times)

I came home from work tonight to find a notice from the INS requesting the presence of myself, my wife, and 9 year old son at our local INS office to complete form I-89.  Marina and Yegor received thier conditional green cards (passport stamps) on August 27th of this year, and this was our last contact with the INS, until today.  The notice did not set a deadline for action.

I cannot recall anything about an  "I-89".  I visited the INS site and, following a search, found a reference to it as a "data collection form".  I also searched the P-L archives, and the Warsaw K-1 site, but found nothing.

Anyone have any idea what this might be about?

Thanks,

Dan D.

Bob and Stevo,

Thanks for taking the time to respond.  Bob, what you found makes sense to me.

Dan,

Using a browser entry of "I-89 INS"

I found:   http://www.visalaw.com/96nov/12nov96.html

"Upon approval of the application by the regional office, the applicant will be directed to the local INS office to complete a Firn (Form?) I-89 Data Collection Card for the capture of the biometric data (photograph, index fingerprint and signature) required for the production of the Alien Registration Receipt Card (the "green card"). Eventually, the INS hopes to eliminate the need for a separate Form I-89 card so that local INS processing can be avoided altogether. As noted above, the new rule is effective November 29, 1996. For sixty days thereafter, local INS offices will continue to accept applications, but the local office can opt to forward the application on to the regional INS office. After January 28, 1997, applications covered by the rule that are filed at a local INS office will be returned to the applicant without being processed. The applicant must file with the regional office."

Does that help you?

Bob

just what it says?  A form used to collect data on marriages for statistical purposes?  Probably that's why you have to go there so they can 'interview' you and the INS officr can fill out the data sheet.  Just a guess.
