I remember that there was a big discussion about health care coverage and how many of the women who have come here have not been able to be covered until they have a SS# etc..

I just called my companies HMO and told them that I was getting married in the Fall and that my fiancee wasn't an American citizen (nor her son) and that they wouldn't have SS#s etc..  They told me no problem, as soon as you are married, put them on your policy and they will use your SS#..
Is it really that easy??

Have you thought about how / whether you will provide coverage for your fiance between the time she arrives and when you marry her?

We have had at least on poster her who racked up some serious medical bills when his fiance first arrived.

had no problems.  Lots of insurance companies won't issue med coverage unless they have an SSN for the dependents.  You can explain to them until you are blue in the face that your new wife should be covered, but they don't understand and have no provisions to cover someone w/o an SSN.  Same goes for life insurance coverage.  If your company told you it wasn't a problem, that's great.  But that's not universally true as a lot of others can attest to when trying to get their foreign born wife covered.

They're covered with or without SSNs. SSN is for the IRS to know about your retirement money and financial status. It is easy for companies to use it for identification.

My only trouble was listing my son's name by the affectionate form at the dentist and his given name on insurance. That was a fun conversation when I conferenced on the insurance rep and the dental office. The insurance man totally butchered his first and last name all through the call. I even corrected him, but he had a mind set to mispronounce it every time.

So, you should have no problem. It's easy to get a SSN. Hopefully you won't have to wait behind all the hispanic people trying to get their's. ;-)

There SHOULD NOT be any problems but...you never know what is going to happen when you deal with insurance companies. I got my fiancee and daughter on my health insurance right away (they ARE your legal dependants as soon as they enter the US) but had problems with my dental insurance. I don't know if it was a problem with Delta Dental or my HR dept.

As far as SS #s go, your fiancee can get one as soon as she gets here as long as she has her I-94 card stamped "employment authorized" at the POE (they usually do this but you might want to check to be sure that they do). Her son will have to wait until he has his "green card" to get a SS#.

an SSN for him by first applying for an EAD card, then with this you can get an SSN.  No need to wait for the green card, which can take quite some time.

When I adopted my daughter, I could put her on my policy as soon as the adoption was final (which was before she had an ssn).

When I got married four years ago, and had step children, I could put them on my policy as soon as I was married.

I think it does depend on the company. It's not a federal thing... it's a company thing.

The SSN is simply an identifying number. It has no significance beyond that for private health care.
