Just returned from 10 days in Kiev. Boy, some big differences from my initial trip there in 93. Lots of (especially young) people speak English, and cell phones everywhere. Some basic comments:
When renting an apartment with phone, it is nice to be able to dial 8, to call other cities and to use international credit cards. Many phones restrict access to dialing 8, necessitating the use of phone cards, which aren't too bad to other countries, but are a real pain calling other cities, and it takes dialing many numbers to get through, if you get through.
Patrick advised me of an interpreter, Svita, who turned out to be excellent. E-mail me if you want her E-address, although she'll be in Holland for 3 months.
Visited a few local agencies while there. Charodney, advertised in Kiev Post, was honest, and provided a few nice introductions. Vera Agency (Luba) had many photos of women in varying states of nudity, and I doubt the sincerity of many of her clients. While there, Anastasia had a weekend of socials, so I decided to pay for 2 of them, price was negotiable. Frankly, I never saw such a room full of dull, unattractive ladies (Of course the men were no prizes either). It was held at the Saigon Disco, and once the music started it was impossible to hold a conversation due to the loud noise. The owner (or some 0ld guy I paid my money to) was a complete idiot. I have been on other tours in past (EC, etc.) so I was able to compare. His answers to my questions were foolish, and I don't trust this guy. I would caution anyone from using the services of Anastasia, there are other agencies that do a much better job of providing ladies, and offering the right environment.
After talking with a number of locals, I will reiterate what many people have said. Do NOT send money to a woman you have not met. Even for alleged E-mail costs. There is far too much scamming going on. I basically don't care if foolish men lose money. The problem is it feeds the corrupt system, with many ladies making big bucks collecting from different guys. If they are serious to write you, almost all can get access to a computer to send an E-mail, through work, a friend, or relative. And almost anyone working can afford to correspond. The amount of money extracted from foreigners from agencies and lady scammers is staggering. That's all for now.
