Title: Latina terminology
Post by: OkieMan on February 16, 2005, 05:00:00 AM
I am tossing this out to anyone who can help me understand what I call "latina terminology".  It probably is because of having to translate everything from spanish to english or vice versa.  But, for instance; I have seen several women  on some websites say that they want a man who is comprehensive. I am currently corresponding with a lady from Cali who said the same thing. What is that?  Since it is perceived by them as being a positive quality, and not a negative one; I definitely want to find out what it means.  Another for instance is the term detailer.  I found out that meaning a couple of years ago.  But, these type of words or phrases come up every now and then, and I don't understand.  So, can someone lend a hand?

Detallista means a man pay attention to little details. This especially relates to personal appearance.

Comprehensivo means the man is understanding.

what is most likely happening is that they are using an online translator which can confuse things and sometimes get you into trouble.  for instance "I'm a poor dancer" translates into "I have to dance for money".  The best is to have the Spanish Version and have someone qualified to translate it.  She probably meant "understanding" for comprehensible.  They do have many phrases that do not translate well or do not even translate at all and sometimes that is the problem.  Imagine saying "I'm down with that" (not that I would) and trying to use an online translation tool to translate that into Spanish.

Okie, they seem to use a crappy translator software.

'Detailer' - my guess is detallista.  As in a detail-oriented person.

'Comrehensive' - is comprensivo.  That's a person who is 'understanding', as in a guy who can tell what's on her mind and 'understand her'.  If that's ever humanely possible ;)

Here goes..... comprensivo means someone who is understanding, ie. understands her.  And detailer would mean a person who is generous in the little things, like remembering a special day, bringing her little gifts, etc., showing that she is special to him, and showing he cares.  Both qualities are very important to latinas everywhere.

Yeah, I already knew what detailer was.  I included it in my post so that you would have some form of reference.  But, thanks for your input on that and comprehensive too.
Basically, I just have to convince her that I am a warm, wonderful, caring man.  Gee, that fits me perfectly.  Lucky for her I leap tall buildings in  a single bound too. ha
