Title: K1 Post by: papi on December 12, 2004, 05:00:00 AM I sent the original I29 petion not long ago and want to get ahead of the game and not entirely clear on the next steps. A visa kit i have reads to send the I34 Affidavit of Support to my novia after sending the petition. But then it sounds like the I34 will not be needed until the interview. Latin folks aren't always the most organized so i'd prefer to hold on to all documents and hand carry to the interview with my novia. To that end, is anybody clear on exactly what documents my novia needs from me for any responses required regarding packet 3/4 and prior to the interview? any clarification is appreciated

You’re correct, the I-134 won’t be needed until the interview, but you can prepare the forms and documents now. You will need to provide photocopies of your complete tax returns (including W-2s and all attachments) for the last 3 years. For the interview, you should have a letter from your employer confirming permanent employment and current salary, preferably dated within about 1 month of the interview. She should also have copies a few of your most recent pay stubs. She should also have original certified copies of any of your personal documents that were submitted with your petition as photocopies, including your birth certificate and complete versions of all divorce decrees if applicable. Make sure she has documentation of your meeting in person within the last 2 years and lots of documentation for proof of valid relationship. While your petition is being processed, she should be very busy collecting all her required certified documents, including passport, birth certificate, baptismal certificate, police certificates, and any divorce/annulment decrees. If she lived or worked in another country, she should work on obtaining any required foreign police certificates now. wow, you are a wealth of info Ray. You say she should have the documents. If I am planning to attend to interview, will she still need any documents prior to the interview? You mention baptismal certificate - i don't recall reading that being needed for the K1 (maybe that is for the K3). I am not sure if my novia was baptized. Also, I am self-employed so counting on the W2 and tax return along with bank letters being sufficient. I believe she has her passport, police certif, and birth certif. think i pretty much have all the forms and paperwork together i need. Any additional feedback is appreciated. I’m not sure how they submit the documents in Bogota, whether they are submitted in advance of the interview or not, so someone else will have to help you out there. The baptismal certificate is not a hard requirement, but if she has one, it’s a good idea to have it on hand during the interview. In the case that there is any question about date of birth or parentage, the baptismal cert is often preferred as secondary evidence to the birth certificate. If your primary source of income is from self employment, then I would bring as much evidence of a steady income as you can. Make sure your tax returns have all the accompanying forms. If you don’t want her to see all of your financial info, the embassy may allow you to submit it directly in a sealed envelope. If you will be there for the interview, I wouldn’t think it would be a problem. All she is going to need from you at the interview is the I-134 together with the supporting documents for the I-134. That's it. Everything else she supplies from Colombia. thanks Utopia. that is pretty much how i read things. i think they send her forms 230, 156, in packet 3/4 but i already completed those for her. think i am good to go for the most part Title: Re: Re: Re: K1 Post by: utopiacowboy on December 14, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: K1, posted by papi on Dec 14, 2004
Yes, they send her those forms in Packet 3 along with the instructions, the checklist and an I-134. You seem to have a pretty good handle on it! Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: K1 Post by: papi on December 14, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: K1, posted by utopiacowboy on Dec 14, 2004
well, i learn something new everyday. i just read that the tax returns are supposed to be notarized. i had the I34 notarized but thought that was the extent of the notary documents for the k1. this is not a DIY project for the "average Joe" Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K1 Post by: Ray on December 15, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: Re: K1, posted by papi on Dec 14, 2004
Tax returns DO NOT need to be notarized! Simple photocopies of your returns or IRS transcripts are fine. Ray Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K1 Post by: papi on December 15, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K1, posted by Ray on Dec 15, 2004

I did not have my tax returns notarized - all I had were plain ordinary copies. I had no problems in Bogota. I think you are ok. That is a good ideal on just holding the papers until she needs them for the interview. I sealed them in a yellow folder for my ex-wife and told her the goverment wanted her to keep them sealed until the interview... I know it sounds funny but at least she did not lose anything until the interview.. I would be careful about asking to many questions about visas the chancellor is Title: Re: Re: K1 Post by: papi on December 12, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: K1, posted by Fuzzyone on Dec 12, 2004
