Title: Cali day trips - photo report Post by: cancunhound on December 12, 2004, 05:00:00 AM OK here it is - my suggestions for some day trips from Cali that are safe(?) and much more interesting than the typical zoo, sugar cane plantation, hacienda BS. I made the mistake of agreeing with my wife on buying a car down in Cali - now I'm kind of on board with it, as I hit the pavement alot over the last 2 weeks.
First, some driving tips - it may seem chaotic at first when driving in Cali proper but it basically boils down to this - buses and potholes - after you become familiar with a road you'll realize that the lanes are meaningless - what you wan't to do is avoid potholes and jockey for position to pass the buses that occupy the right lane - which is typically where you will need to be to change streets to get anywhere. With passport and US drivers license you are good to go - no problems at checkpoints outside of the city. There is a false rumor that you should not carry your passport when traveling about - that's BS - you'll need your passport when stopped at police or army checkpoints - these are not a big deal. Make a copy of your passport and send it to an email account like yahoo so you can always retrieve it if needed. You'll encounter frequent tolls (peajes) on the roads outside of the city - for a small car expect a 3.7 mil peso fee for each one you pass. Speaking of cars - last year I rented a nice 4x4 at the National Rent A Car office adjacent to the hotel Inter. I was stopped at every police/army checkpoint while driving through the cafetera zone. No problem - just a hastle - and I always carry packs of Malboro's to hand out as friendly gifts in these situations - Malboro's from the US are like gold. My wife purchased at my request a "used" car - little did I know that what she had purchased was basically a brand new car that only had 2000 km on it. It's a 2 dooor chevy that is the rave down there now - and having driven it extensively through some tough terrain - I'm on board with it. It's got a peppy engine, wide stance and great ground clearance - I drove it like a jeep. I was not stopped at any checkpoints this trip. So, here's the scoop: http://www.picturetrail.com Album = cancun_hound I did not have time to massage the photos so it's best to view with a high speed connection: 1:) Pance 2:) Nirvana 3:) Popayan -suerte any questions just shoot Title: Re: Cali day trips - photo report Post by: Ken2 on December 14, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Cali day trips - photo report, posted by cancunhound on Dec 12, 2004
Nice fotos, thanks for posting Popayan especially. Title: Re: Popayan Post by: cancunhound on December 15, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Cali day trips - photo report, posted by Ken2 on Dec 14, 2004
Glad you enjoyed them - here's a test, check out the fountain photo again at the hotel - how many armed guards can you spot? I was only left with a handful of photos that I could post where it didn't appear that I was in the middle on an armed conflict :) The national police had a lock-down on the place when we arrived for lunch. There were some big-wig politicians scheduled to have lunch there on the same day - I guess they let me in because of the gringo factor - it was a very tranquil lunch as nobody else was permitted inside. The big-wigs arrived just as we left, I had the run of the hotel grounds solo with my party the whole time - I'd post the "real" photos but I don't wan't to give Popayan a bad rap - Popayan is safe - getting there is suspect however. Cancunhound I've been trying to reach you. I'd like to hear what happened to CaliGringo.com. I've started another website similar to PL and would like to invite you to join if you ever have the time or interest. Cancunhound, I too would be interested in hearing what happened at Caligringo. Weren't you having problems with a poster complaining to your server? Coincidentally, Gringos.com was hacked into the same day that CG went off line. I guess I didn't visit CG enough to learn beforehand that you were looking for someone to take it over. Anyway, nice to see you back posting at P-L. Thanks for the welcome back - None of my mods wanted to take over the site and the rent was due - I knew I wouldn't have time to devote to it over the last year - hence I let it slide. No hackers - just a lot of panzies posting so who could blame anyone for not wanting it. Steve, I'll probably have some spare time over the holidays to round up all the good info that I had stored concerning Cali, such as maps, my old forum archives, agency lists, etc.. Maybe you'll have a use for them with your new site. I just briefly checked out your new endeavour and it's obvious that you're carrying your reknown humor into it. (BTW - I only read the 1st message in the TripReports and I'd suggest you raise the BS meter on desperado - "Flores Frescas" is simply a myth created by gringos searching for spouses in Colombia - everyone knows that all gringos that head down to Colombia in search of a bride are good hearted, loyal gentlemen that would never be caught in such a place - a little blue bird told me that a more likely spot for such a congregation of gentlemen would be at La Mansion Rosada, Calle 20N No.4N-16, the price is not 16 mil - it's 15 to get in, and the 15-20 model types mentioned would be valid if referring to an issue of National Geographic - :) Title: Re: Cali day trips - photo report Post by: lswote on December 13, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Cali day trips - photo report, posted by cancunhound on Dec 12, 2004

Man can, you are one traveling wilbury! I thought about renting a car in Barranquilla last trip. Never mind the potholes. i am afraid of that crazy Colombian traffic. And what happens if an American collides with a Colombian? Sounds like a real can o'worms. I take trips to Cartegena with my private taxi driver, but i can't image being on foot outside the reaches of the main cities. Good idea on the extra passport de yahoo. How's the Internet connection speed from those jungles? enjoyed the post! -john Title: thanks for the pictures....
