Title: Cell phone bandwidths in colombia Post by: Z on October 26, 2004, 04:00:00 AM jediknight posted this valuable info several days ago:
"as far as the frecuency for cell phones in colombia, comcel uses 850mhz while ola uses 1900 mhz, celcaribe uses 850mhz." Very valuable info for those of us thinking of taking a sim-unlocked cell phone down and buying a sim card there. Does anyone else on the board have first-hand info about the bandwidths? For example, what does BellSouth use? Are there other cell phone companies down there? bellsouth uses cdma and tdma technology, as in verizon and att respectivly, but like att here in the US, Bellsouth is phasing out the old tdma technology. i was able to activate a V60t att phone with bellsouth without a problem, however, i also took a V60c verizon phone and they weren't able to activate it. i forgot the exact reason but something to do with the gov't not allowing cdma phones brought from the US to be activated there, maybe because it's such a new system that they want to make sure that colombians buy their phones in colombia rather than getting their phones cheaper from here. [This message has been edited by Locii] This is a decent resource: http://www.gsmworld.com/index.shtml And here is the section addressing services available everywhere: And Colombia specifically: Due to the dynamic nature of such technologies, I would re-re-verify everything, but this is a great launch point (with regional provider web site addresses often). I mentioned this phone before...if cell phones can be exciting, this is a prime candidate....the Treo 650 has been officially 'announced'. The GSM version is not available yet, but within a month or two probably. I don't think they will want to miss holiday sales if they can help it: ** I though this had a 1.3 mpixel camera, but its seems to only be .3 mpixel after all? Its a 4band GSM world phone. The release of this will likely drop the second-hand price of its (quite decent in itself) predecessor, the Treo 600. Keep an eye on Ebay for that. I can readily the 600, and in all likelihood, the 650 as well. I have tried, unsuccessfully, like 10X to edit my message about the Treo650 camera...it seems its only 640X480 after all, not the 1.3megapixel speculated previously. Ciao |
