I appreciate you setting me up for my punch line down below. I guess we needed a drum roll. ;o))

My fiancee is a Registered Nurse, so I don't think sex appeal was a factor in her case. It was even a government job. She was told that the job would have been hers if she had been taller. I think she only missed it by an inch or two. I believe the requirement had to do with performing duties, such as hanging IV bags and reaching equipment. I found out about it when I told her of different job offers she had received in the US. My fiancee kept asking me if there were height requirements. I know many Filipina nurses in the US who out perform most of the taller American ones. They just grab a stool, that are everywhere in hospitals and doctors offices, and carry on.

We used to have height requirements on fire departments because of job performance issues, until the government declared them discriminatory. I know one particular fire fighter who is a little over 3 feet tall. He was able to pass all of the physical requirements and out perform many of the other recruits.

In the Philippines if you are looking for a job it isn't that easy. Some company even if you are qualified for that job but if you don't know somebody in there then they won't accept you. Secondly, mostly working in fast food restaurant like Mcdonald, Kentucky or Jollibee, etc. they only hired those young ones with pleasing personality to attract customers.
While in other countries like Hongkong, Singapore and Malaysia I saw mostly workers are disabled and quite old people working in Fast Foods restaurants. I thought to myself if only Philippines same like HK or Singapore, etc. I think we have a better place. I mean we don't need to go to overseas to work and sacrifice.

Not only do you have to know someone to get hired in the Philippines, you have to have a Master's Degree in "Deep Fry Technology" and minor in " Chemical Properties of Frying Oils" just to make french fries. A slight exaggeration but not too far from the sad truth.

Few "good" jobs and many applicants is big problem in the Philippines. Employers can be very selective and require high qualifications. In the US, if you are over-qualified, you usually don't get the job. I have heard that some people leave things off their resumes.

You're right for one job opening in the Phil. there will be hundreds applying for it and indeed, the employer gets to be very selective hence the strict requirements in physical as well as educational and experience qualifications.

It’s typical in the Phils to hire someone based primarily on looks, age, sex, marital status, etc. All those things that you can’t even ask over here. This is especially true for jobs involving contact with the public, like sales girls in a department store. I think a lot of it is based on the “sex appeal” of the prospective employee, like the airlines here used to do with stewardesses for example. They just haven’t caught up with us yet in the political correctness krapp. Give them a few more years… (LOL).

I just remember when I applied to 4 different
companies. I spent a lot for picture! Gosh!!!!!

Those sound like my requirements for a wife. LOL Well..except I didn't have a height requirement. I also included auto mechanic, pilot/with own plane, chef, master brewer, computer programer, accountant, financial investor, swim suit model, and fitness instructor. If she met all of those, I figured I could hire a maid.  ;o)))
