That link has a lot of dubious material. He is using statistics in ways that are utterly out of context. For example, even assumming that murder rates in Rio and Sao Paulo are accurate (which I do not), a murder rate without a population (density) is meaningless. If the info on this page is to be beleived: If even half of his garbage is to be beleived, I can offer a simplification to his site....Dangerfinder...wherever Robert Pelton is. Perhaps the best evidence of his nonsensical approach to information is "Russia has gone from superpower to Third World in a mere six years." Guess what? Russia was always third world. It's true, every word! Robert Young Pelton is the world's most excellent expert about everything, especially Brazil. Everybody knows that so why don't you? He even knows the difference between shinola and coffee. Brazil is the most dangerous place in the world. Millions of land mines, terrorists lurking, natives that eat you, all Brazilians have horns and tails, pitchforks, they are all devils, they practice black magic, they eat babies, they all come out at night, naked, and dance wild in the moonlight. Whatever you do, never go there, tell your friends. We want to thank the dog of Cancun for the great URL, and his eloquent posting. His interest in Brazil is wonderful, we love it. We wonder how else he can make Brazil more dangerous. We eagerly await his next posting about the dangers of Brazil. We only wish that he would tell us why he is so interested in Brazil, and why he went to all the trouble to research enough to find a fountain of truth like Pelton, and why he bothered to post it to this list. Finally, and this is going to fly into the teeth of Pelton, not that he has any, but soon is Carnival. You can't justify it any more than the sun and the moon, because after all, that's what it's all about. I laugh and wonder what you all, you listers, are going to do about it. It's coming soon. Thanks for verifying that info - one certainly must be careful about the validity of just one source. Good to have it substantiated by an insider like yourself. Thanks also for the kind words about taking the trouble to research Brazil - but I really can't take any credit. I've wondered about that "we" thing too: 1) I don't think he's Brazilian so he cannot speak as one of its citizens, imploring us to savor the delights. 2) Maybe he's referring to himself and his wife as "we." Interesting info. Brazil is not grandma's back yard (safe)... but it still has many incredible places and people, and safe places. Thanks for the link to keep informed from places and different opinions. The USA came up with: Nothing on Colombia came up. "file not found. The requested URL was not found on this server. " Always wanted to visit there, but was not sure on danger/etc. A beautiful country though. Ecuador, Venesuela, Chile, Uraguay, Argentina, Peru, and Paraguay are not on the list. I would have been interested in reading their comments when I had time. This is a dangerous world that is for sure. Thanks for the links and info. Robert Pelton (comebackalive.com) used to have some "slightly negative" views on Colombia, but due to the recent positive progress in the country he removed those remarks from his website and took Colombia off the world's most dangerous places list. The guy's definitely a nut however I'm not sold on the validity of any of his "tales" whatsoever. I put 'em right up there with Geraldo. That Colombian link went down on his website at the time of the "kidnapping" and hasn't returned. Also, if you noticed the NG story with the initial brief interview - it had a reference to a complete story to be posted in a specific later issue - which never happened. What a brilliant idea - just email the FARC, ELN, AUC, etc.. to get a "pass" to go birdwatching with confidence! The whole premise of that tale is just not believeable - hookup with some fellow backpackers in Panama and happy-go-luckily decide to explore the Darien Gap? With intent of entering Colombia? Hmmm... must have been some good stuff they smoked to come up with that one. I think the truth can be found in Pelton's own disclaimer on the website, which in part refers to having an "uncanny knack" for predicting such things as "wars" and "kidnappings". That "kidnapping" was certainly predictable :) |
