Title: Special Airfares to Peru
Post by: pablo on October 09, 2003, 04:00:00 AM

These airfare specials look good for those considering going to Peru.  Hope this helps for those recent posters looking to go there.  Has anyone used this travel agency before?  They don't just specialize to Peru.

I will be staying at a hotel in miraflores, as my novia has told me this is the best area to stay in near Peru.  Apparently, the area near the airport is not safe nor clean.  I will be there on November 22 and will leave November 24.  Will either of you be around the miraflores area on November 23?

Also, I'm flying out of Los Angeles, if either of you are from this area let me know.  I'm a wus when if comes to airplanes and international travel (haven't done the first in over 20 years and never did the second), so I can use some support.

You're only there for 3 days? Ouch! Yes, I'll be around Miraflores and we can get together.

Some tips for the Lima airport:
1. When you get off the plane and get in line for customs, the last 2 rows are for foreigners. Ignore them, just get in the shortest line and they will process you.
2. When you pick up your bag you may have to hit a button to determine if you go through customs or not. Sometimes they make you punch it, sometimes they don't. If you do and you get a red light you have to go through a customs check. Try to get a woman and when she asks you why you are in Peru tell her: "to see my novia." Watch the smile and you should be outta there but quick.
3. Are you ready? This is where the fun starts. You walk past customs and head for the door where about 1004 people are swarming around the door. Just gently push past them. If your GF is waiting for you, she'll be here.
4. Gotta have wheels, so grab a taxi. If your GF took one there and he was honest, she can ask him to stay and it might be cheaper. Otherwise, there is a sign with the taxi rates to areas of Lima. I think Miraflores is 35 soles, or $10 US. Make a point of reading the sign and insisting that you will pay nothing more than what's listed and you'll be fine.
5. The taxi driver will try to steer you to a hotel he says is very __________. IOW, he gets a kickback from them. Insist on going to your original destination. He may continue, but be firm.

I gotta go to work, but I'll have more tips for you later. Feel free to ask, too.

was funny all the people waiting around the exit of the airport.....I was like WHAT THA ...The airport looks better now, they have been working on it..slowly but surely ....I wouldnt give the Taxi Driver 35 soles though to Mira Flores...16-20 soles is more like it, 20 at the max....best bet is to let the girl do the talking and get a taxi for you...better yet, some of the hotels you stay at will come pick you up free if you tell them the flight you are on....when going around Lima, taxi is the best bet .if you stay just in the Mira Flores area...3-5 soles out of the area like ...umm the Indian Market in San Miguel 8 soles ..you got to hagle with them, which is easy when about 3 more taxis are lined up right behind the one you are talking to .....I might be a gringo, but I know I have some leverage too......Ive gotten where Ive taken the Combi (the bus) ..when im with my wife, depends if you are in a hurry..taxi is faster and safer....the bus cheaper 2 soles ...hard to beat .30 cents ..ha ha ha...but I really do suggest you be with a local if you decide to do that...Ive taken the bus several times but always with my wife.....its a fun ride, to watch in action...even more than the taxi..depending on who is driving....

Just to add that since this is his first time in El Peru, It will be 100% better if his girlfriend picks him up and have a taxi there.

My fiance lives in S.M. de Porres also AND I'm there for the same time frame. If it's in San Isidro, I'm sure it's nice. I go for cheap since I don't much time in the hotel so I'm in a place in Lince, although I may go look for a place closer to Maribel. We should get together when we're there. I know some good restaurants and the women would probably like a double date.

I've used OLE Travel, in SFO and RA Travel is always advertising in the San Jose Murky News, but they're already closed for today since they're in NY. OLE and Coastyletravel have the same rates for the some carriers and time frame. OLE has decent service, but I haven't used RA Travel. Look in the Travel section of your local paper and you should see agencies listing prices for international destinations.

A ticket from SFO to Lima through Houston, 11/21-12/2 costs $565 including taxes. Not bad.

Agreed not bad. We paid 514 ATL to Lima a couple of weeks ago, for travel in mid-January. That was found on Travelocity.
