Title: Selling Mexican Silver in Colombia
Post by: elcolombiano on July 30, 2003, 04:00:00 AM
My girlfriend in Cali asked me to look into buying Silver in Mexico (Tijuana) and bringing it to her to sell (as a business) the next time I visit her in Cali. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My wife was employed formerly by one of Colombia's finest jewelers.  She was surprised at the quality of some of the silver that's available in Mexico.  Caution however, you'll likely not find it in TJ.  There is a specific region known for it's high quality silver, doesn't come to mind right now but it was plentiful at the main manufacturer in Acapulco and is typically engraved somewhere on the piece.  Maybe a better idea is to work the other direction and bring back their high quality gold from Colombia to sell in the states - she considers our standard 14 carat worthless.

Plenty is imported to TJ since that's the biggest tourist destination in the country - but the prices aren't nearly as attractive as in central Mexico.

I've just been burnt enough at the border towns with low quality crap - it's obvious after a short time - the stuff will stain anything, one has to be careful especially for the untrained eye such as mine.  Is TJ #1? I would have thought Cancun - but maybe the border proximity of TJ sends it over the top as far as numbers go.  Ahhh Mexico - I love it.

TJ gets 28 Million visitors a year, Cancun only a tiny fraction of that. Yes, it's because it's a short drive from one of the most densely populated areas of the US.

If you could find someone to do a bit of show and tell, you'd be able to identify Taxco silver items fairly easily over the touristy crap.

Me too - love Mexico - to visit, though - sure wouldn't want to live there - working there is hard enough.
