Colombia in Americartes
March 2003  

Mark your calendars and tell your friends: During the month of March is your chance to experience some of the best artistic expressions Colombia has to offer at the AMERICARTES festival of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Multiple Grammy winner- Juanes, headlines a talented and diverse group of artists who will perform as part of the Kennedy Center's Americartes program, a three-week festival that this year features the art and culture of the Andes region and Mexico. Other Colombian events and performances, include a free concert on the Millennium Stage by rock and pop band, Aterciopelados, the Café Colombia Jazz Ensemble, a homage to renown author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and feature presentations of "La Celestina" play and the film "Bolivar Soy Yo"…

El artista colombiano Juanes será uno de los invitados de honor a Americartes, un programa de tres semanas que celebra el arte y la cultura de la región andina y de México. Colombian musicians Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago have been playing together since 1990. Their unique fusion of rock, pop, and electronic music with a strong Caribbean and folkloric mix won them the 2001 Latin Grammy for best rock album (Gozo poderoso) and they were cited by Time Magazine as one of the 10 best rock bands of the year.

Juanes (Colombia) Free !!
March 24, 2003, 6:00 p.m. - Millennium Stage
Colombian rocker/songwriter Juanes combines the rhythms of rock, "Vallenato" (traditional folk music from Colombia), and Andean music. In 2001, he shocked the Latin music world by receiving a record-breaking seven Latin Grammy nominations for his debut album Fijate Bien. The album’s deeply poetic lyrical commentary on society, violence and love resonated with critics as: “one of the most thought-provoking, exhilarating discs released this year…a debut to remember” - Billboard.

Teatro Nacional de Colombia production of La Celestina (Colombia)

El Teatro Nacional from Bogota, Colombia was last seen at the Kennedy Center during Americartes 2001 performing a powerful adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Cronica de Una Muerte Anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold) returns to the Center with La Celestina, based on the classic 15th century Spanish novel by Fernando de Rojas and starring Fannie Mickey as La Celestina.

An Homage to Gabriel García Márquez
March 9, 2003, 5:00 p.m. - AFI Theater
Gabriel García Márquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, No One Writes the Colonel, Love in the Time of Cholera, and dozens of other novels, short stories, and works of historical fiction, is a Colombian-born writer of astonishing skill, thought by many to be one of the world's greatest living authors. He is a pioneer of the Latin American literary "boom," and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. The world of García Márquez’s fiction is a magical realm where the strange and exotic can suddenly become comfortably familiar, and the whole concept of an objective reality is questioned. Curated and hosted by Washington Post Book World editor, Marie Arana, participants include:

• Laura Restrepo, a novelist, journalist, ex-guerilla, and peace negotiator, is one of the most provocative writers to emerge from the rich Colombian literary scene. Among her many novels are La isla de la Pasion, and El Leopardo al Sol.

• Edith Grossman is the award-winning English translator of major works by many of Latin America's most important writers. She has translated García Márquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera, Of Love and Other Demons, News of a Kidnapping, and Strange Pilgrims, and other works by García Marquez, Alvaro Mutis, and others.

A Tribute to Latin American Poets (various)
March 23, 2003, 5:00 p.m. - AFI Theater
Spend an evening, co-hosted by American poet Edward Hirsch, with five of the most notable poets from Latin America - including Peru’s Antonio Cisneros, Mexico’s Homero Aridjis, Colombia’s Jaime Manrique, Venezuela’s Yolanda Pantin, and Ecuador’s Jorge Enrique Adoum.

AmericArtes will also include an Andean film program, curated by New York-based Cinema Tropical, including:

Teetering between reality and insanity, an actor portraying Simón Bolívar takes on the thoughts and actions of South America’s great Liberator general in this dark comedy about the violent, cruel, marvelous, and strange world experienced by Colombians in the new millennium.

Education Programs

In conjunction with the AmericArtes Festival, the Center’s Education Department will work to arrange a number of education and outreach activities to make Festival artists available to students and community members, and to bring the festival to thousands of students and teachers across the country. These events will offer both students and adults insights into the cultural and historical context of the work presented on stage and spark dialogue between the audience and the artists who have brought the performances into being. Events may include workshops, demonstrations, dinner/ discussions, multi-session courses, panels, master classes, and open rehearsals.

The Festival’s website will include interactive student projects, live Internet broadcasts, and online video and audio performance samples for classroom use, as well as resource links for learning about Latin American arts and culture. Artists and authors participating in the Festival will also take part in discussions and workshops to be broadcast online and via satellite to classrooms across the United States and internationally.

Luz Amparo, owner of Latin Best in Cali told me a few months ago she was jouning forces with an American to operate an agency in Costa Rica. Don't know what came of it but you can give her a call and find out at T:57 2 665 2681.

I know there's a website out there called mytica.com, but they only seem to have a small number of fairly homely women there and I don't know if they have any on-site agency in Costa Rica.

Why use an agency?  You may just encounter many of the same girls at the Blue Marlin without having to pay an agency fee :)
Seriously, I understand it is difficult to find a geniune bride in CR, especially in San Jose, due to CR being such a popular prostitution destination.  Just my 2 cents - not meant to inflame anyone.

I meant to add that "agencies" are often confused with "escort services" in San Jose.  On a positive note, you can encounter many geniune ticas by strolling about and hitting the popular discos, etc..
(Just never say you're staying at the Hotel DelRey - if you happen to be doing so)

I am staying at the Presidente. I have met several ladies from mytica who I think were "nice girls". It is $500 to join spanisheyes costa rica. I read either on this forum or another that Luz from LATIN BEST was opening a agency in Costa Rica. I went to their website and found nothing about it. So I am wondering if anyone has information on this.
