Would you please describe the unusual Colombian food that you miss. Right now,I have to go along with Pete, C&W and Paladar for lunch. Maybe san cocho gallena at Simon Parilla. But the rest is grease to me. The real treat is the cost. You can't eat all that they give you at Lenos E Carbone for 8,500 p.

Jim,
People bragged up Lenos E Carbone to me.I tried it.It was a good value and lots of food but not really good as a steak house would be in the US.Maybe my stomach just went south when I did.The first week I was there last time I was losing weight, didn't like anything.Mostly it was eating at my mother in laws. For breakfast they might cook you some eggs, those were OK,but these dry corn cakes just sort of stuck in my mouth. They think they are a specialty.I shouldn't complain, there were trying hard to please me.Whats that burger place, presto or something like that?I had a good hamburger, the next one was awfull.Mcdonalds is considered gormet there.I did not try them though.I immagine even the big macs got screwed up.
So when I come home and my wife wants to go to the Colombian restaurant,no thanks, I got a years worth of that on my last trip.

You don't have to eat it. I never heard of Lenos E Carbone. I may have eaten there, but I'm not sure. The name of the restaurant doesn't matter to me, just what's on the menu does. I would appreciate a nice bowl of sancocho, con pescado, y arroz blanco con frijoles. Despues me gustaria tomar una cervezita. Aaron

I  do like the san cocho and frijoles verde which by the way is paisa food. But empanadas, bunelos, the breaded cutlets, and costillas are my cardiologists nightmare. I usually loose weight there and think its because the diet is not big on Carbs. A few more vegetables wouldn't hurt though  asparagas broccoli and coliflower are difficult to find. Fortunately I live one block from Carefour so its easy to shop. JIM C

get your fiber by eating the fruits. In most Colombian families, for each breakfast there is a bowl of fruit salad that includes papaya, pinapple, mango, platano for lunch or dinner, etc. etc.

It's hard to have an asparagas patch in a tropical climate; it gets too hot, and there needs to be allot of rain.

In Cartagena, a girl I met took me to a family farm...they grew COLLARD GREENS !!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, it's "sancocho".

Aaron,
I was at a restaurant in Cali with Nico in Dec 2001.They had stolling musicians playing soft spanish ballads.Reminded me of a restaurant here and made me hungry for an enchalada.Wished I could have had one.

the neighborhood in Guadalajara where my novia lives.  There is a taco stand on every corner, literally, every corner, cooking up tacos, tostadas, the whole mexican fast food thing.  On my last trip, while walking her kids home from school I mentioned the taco stands, we must have passed 10 in a short walk.  She said she would not eat from these, it was not like her cooking, there was only one stand, in the opposite direction where she would buy from.
I'll hit that next trip, this past time she made them for me and her kids one evening, d@mn good, nothing like the american variety.

Aaron,
Really? I was never very fond of Colombian food.To me the best restaurant in Cali was Crepes and Waffles.Someone could do  franchise like that here.Hum,lots of french business investment in Colombia(Carifor  a French supermarket chain).I wonder if thats where crepes and Waffles came from.
My wife complains "you don't like anything I cook." Well, alot of it has this overpowering onion garlic and other flavors. Her empanadas are good. She did well Saturday with this marinated steak she bought at a Mexican market.I'm not sure if it was maranated when she bought it,I need to ask.
Our local Colombian restaurant was bought by Mexicans. We haven't been there since but I guess they kept alot of the Colombian menu plus added some Mexican items. For me that would be a plus.I do like Cuban food. They cook the carne( as in Carne ripada) untill very tender with just the right flavors to me.
