I just called American Express when my wife got her ss card and asked them to add her to my account. she receives a card in her name that actually has a slightly different account number than mine, but the charges all show up on the same statement. It was no hassle at all, done in five minutes. Pete--my bank of 25 years also gave us chit when we tried to open a joint account before she had her license, although we showed them our marriage cert. and her work auth. card. Great service, huh?, but doesn't surprise me. Now my wife has received a Shell oil card and many other offers. Your wife can get a social security card about 10 days after she gets here.Just go to the local SS office and show them her spousal visa stampted in her passport. They will mail it to you ,10 days max. Then she can go to a department store like Macy's where its easy to get a card.It took my wife a couple of months to figure this out,she talks to the cosmetics salespeople and pretty soon they are signing her up for a Macy's card.It was only like a $200 limit card, but soon she starts getting all kinds of card offers in the mail. Now for a car loan she will have to show income or you will have to sign for her,but the credit will already be established with the store cards. One bank wouldn't give her a checking account untill she had a drivers licence, but we found another that would. The drivers licence might be required for a car loan.California is very tough and it took my wife 8 months to get a drivers licence.3 written exams and 4 behind the wheel tests.I guess she could have done it in 3 months but she had to learn to drive first.Of course for person who is a good driver and knows the rules of the road it could be done in a 3 weeks,it takes that long to schedule the drive test, each time, but thats not most Latinas. My soon-to-be spouse will be here in 2 weeks. Right now, she does not even have a social security number. I was able to obtain a credit card for her on my account as an additional card holder. All they needed was her name. No credit check was performed.
