Title: Latinas in the north
Post by: michsteve09 on October 21, 2001, 04:00:00 AM
Has anyone on this board married a Latina who lives in a northern state had problems with the cold winter months? I have been speaking with a woman from Brazil and tried to explain the weather here. I sent pictures of snow and me skiing she said she never saw snow before. I then told her about the cold weather here and explained the easiest way to understand is stick you head in the freezer. She found it funny but also said it's that cold!!! I would hate to fall in love with a woman then find out she can't handle the weather. I am a northern person with Canadian blood in me so I can't see living down south no offense to southerners I just love my four seasons. Any answers would be appreciated thanks.

My wife is from BQ, and I live in Dallas...sure, she hasn't had a good taste of winter yet, but she does not respond well to the cold based on what I have seen.  She's freezing when she's in the supermarket or 'super', as she calls it...same for shopping malls, in the house when the AC is set below 75...

The simple answer is to just tell 'em to put on more clothes...but then it hits you...they don't have any!! and you get to go buy them some new winter clothes...fun fun.

My wife is from the Caribbean. She is Dominican. She got to spend the winter on Long Island. Within 2 days of her arrival, we got the biggest snowfall in years. She actually really liked the cold weather. Now that we live in San Antonio, she hates the weather. The summer was VERY hot, and she couldn't stand it. I think once she sees what the weather is like the rest of the year here, she might like it better.

I think it depends on the lady. The same can be true of having a Latin community nearby. My wife has not missed eating typical Latin food. She says she ate that stuff her whole life, and wants to try new things. Her favorite food right now is Buffalo Wings! She makes a great pasta, and also Linguine with clams.

If your lady is open to new experiences, she will be more likely to be receptive to the different climate. If she is less "adventurous" it might be more difficult.

I think ladies from Bogota would do better in a move to a cold climate.Bogota is much colder than the other major cities of Colombia. My wife is from Cali, which is tropical. She thinks San Jose Ca. is cold.I told her she doesn't know what cold is.Most of the US is much colder in the winter. She knows this now and thinks its a pretty good place to live overall, especially considering where some of her friends are.
I grew up in Idaho, and used to talk like you about liking the seasons, but after many years in California I would never live in a cold climate in the winter again.I don't even visit cold climates in the winter.Freezing your butt off unless out of economic neccesity doesn't make sence to me.Actually Northern Ca. is too cold for me also, but I am tied to some business interests here.
Yes,if the girl really loves you the relationship will probably survive a cold climate, but it will be a negative and add to the adjustment problems she will have anyway.
Another issue that seems to be important to Calinas. They like cities, activity, lots of people around. Many guys in the US may long for the simpler life in a small town, escaping to the boonies, getting away from cities.Your Calina will be bored to death.Sitting in a house on a hill somewhere is not her idea of a good life, even if the house is a mansion.
A Calina I know who recently moved here says she misses the music you can hear at night in Cali and says our streets don't have many people in them.

Well that got my attention. I'm 50's going on first visit before end of year. I've fought all the 'earn a living battles' I want. So ready to kick back, get out of Houston, see the country in RV, ect. So would I be better off in Bogota than Cali.? I am looking around late 30's into late 40's so hopefully at that age night life maynot be as big a issue. Help me out, thanks.

I found my fiance (or rather she found me) in Bogota. But, she's a country girl from outside of Bogota. However, I don't know a good way in general to meet country girls. I feel very lucky to not have met a sophisticated party or career-oriented lady; the agencies and the letter writing system tends to attract city ladies.

I think Bogota is a good place to meet the kind of lady you want. They'll be older and less into partying than the Calenas.

Harry,
The good news is that if you are 50's you can get women in their 20's or 30's,I would recommend 30's.I am 58,my wife is 35.
Maybe bad news of sorts is that these younger women may have a different set of priorities than you. They usually either have kids or want them.In my case a 10 year old step son is better than starting over with babies, but it doesn't
fit with getting in an RV and seeing the country.I am back in the family business again. So I think its important for a guy  to first decide what he would like his lifestyle to be,or what is acceptable, then go looking for the woman that fits it.If you truly want to retire and travel a woman a little older, maybe 35-45,who either has kids who are grown or has accepted not having kids would be a better bet.Bogota may be the better choice, the women tend to be older, speak more english,be more proffesional and be less likely to have children as a top priority.
I went to Cali on the advice of several people. The women tend to be younger and more fun loving and also very pretty.I also wanted a tropical, not cold(as in Bogota) vacation.Finding one who doesn't want or have kids may be difficult there.
There may be other places to consider if you want a kid free envirement at home.Mexico?Brazil?Maybe someone else can help us out here.

Pete
Thnaks for your input. I have seen on various web sites many attractive women in early 40's, divorced or never married, no children, & my guess at that age past childbearing age.I have a large extended family, grown children, soon to have grandchildren so can provided pleanty to be involved in. I have leaned toward Bogota as I get the impression its more conservative in life style. I've had more than enough of women who put parting/disc/bar first. Got any recomendations for agencys in Bogota. BTW airfare on Continential Houston direct Bogota was $408.00 RT this week.
Again thanks

I'd recommend Latin American Introductions--www.laintro.com.  I've been there twice, and they really look out for you and have some pretty women.  I've serious about one, but I can't tell where it's going yet.

Besides, you could also visit other agencies in Bogota if you want (i.e. ODEE).

Harry,
Nelson Grisales at www.laintro.com has an excellent reputation as an agency owner. Some of the other agencies you can sign up with are middle men and will just send you to Nelson for after you spend big bucks to sign up with them.
Scan down the list and then go to the archives to see Bogota trip reports.Sol did a trip report on this page dated 10/6.
Good luck.

That's funny, Pete and Sol also recommended LAI.... I guess you better go there.  If you really want to get the most choices, you might want to place an ad, but you honestly don't really need it.  One guy got around 600 phone calls to the agency for a few hundred bucks placing the ad.  Some of the girls looked like something out of a Spanish Soap...really pretty.  I personally met a beautiful girl the first night and stuck with her both trips.  I can only wonder what I would have met if I placed an ad.

FYI: I've was down in July and again in August.

Harry,

As Pete suggests, check out my trip report.

I had a very good experience at Charlie's Place, a hotel in Bogota, in the same building as LA Intro. I don't know how the agency is, though, and their web-site, last time I looked there, wanted a membership fee. See if you can negotiate a per day or per contact fee.

I would recommend that you strike up an email or telephone conversation with Nelson Grisales about who you're looking for before you go.

I will be going through this in a few months when my fiancee` gets here. The fact of the matter if they love you enough it will not be a problem in my opinion. My girl is from Lima, not real warm there compared to other places, but still it gets as cold in Wisconsin as it does in Michigan. I am sure it will be a real shock for her at first, but like she says she will get use to it.

There will be three main reasons why she will she will want to return home:  December, January, and February.
(Sorry about that- only a joke.)

That is kind of funny about Dec, Jan, and Feb but lately  Michigan hasn't been very cold. The scary thing will be when she thinks spring is finally arriving and that sudden early April storm dumps 12 inches of snow. Another thing will be her first driving experience on ice and snow.

Thanks for the message I hope the best of luck for you and everything works out. I think it is easier to adjust to cold than heat anyways. You can always put more clothes on than take them off. I don't see her skiing anytime soon in below zero weather though ha ha!

You are right about the clothes, I will take winter over a hot summer any day !! But it is true, if your girl really loves you the cold will not make a bit of difference.

Why do the latinas have no problems with freezing ice cold showers but major problems sixty degree weather?

Larry,
You are right, there is nothing colder than a cold shower.I guess the answer is they are used to it and the shower is over quickly.I learned right away you don't linger under a cold shower like a warm one,you get wet, step back, wash and quickly rinse.Rocio says she still takes cold showers here but I guess she means not hot.She lets the water run untill its warm and lets out a yell (no open water!)if you turn on the hot water at a nearby faucet which cools down the shower.
My 1st 2 trips to Colombia I took only one cold shower. We were in a little hotel in Providencia.Rocio gets up and takes a shower,no comment.I get in the shower and let out a yell,"this water is cold!"I asked her"you don't have hot water at home do you?" No,of course not.Last trip we stayed with her family and I took cold showers for a month.I got used to it a bit,but I would still look up at that shower head and say"do I really want to do this?"
How about Bogota?I immagine there is more hot water there but if not you would really freeze, the tap water would be 15-20 degrees colder.
Are you going to Cali Christmas?

Pete

That amazes me also, how can these people shower in that cold water.Being nieve I thought everybody has cold and hot running water but was I ever wrong.  I froze my a-- off the first time I stayed at my girlfriends house and I am from a cold climate. For her that is the only way to have a shower but you take her somewhere coolerthan Cali, that I would consider T shirt weather and she is shivering.  Last trip the girlfriend picked up a shower head water heater and had it installed  so I wouldn't freeze when I took my shower. That has to be one of the greatest inventions.

good question..i dont have the answer. i remember on one of my trips to cali in january it rained and the temp must have dropped to a wopping 70 degrees and L complained all day how cold it was, shivering and even goosebumps on her arms. i remember thinking this girl would really be hurtin in chicago.
