Title: E-mail virus on the loose
Post by: Patrick on July 24, 2001, 04:00:00 AM
Since I get a lot of emails from Latin America, I may be seeing this much more than you guys, but there's apparently a virus sweeping through and we're getting literally 100 per day.  It's being distributed in both Spanish or English and judging by the Enlgish, it must have been written by someone who's first language not English.  If anybody gets an email with either of these messages, don't open the attachment (it's a batch file (*.bat)-

"Hola como estas ?

Te mando este archivo para que me des tu punto de vista

Nos vemos pronto, gracias."

English version-

"Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks"

I'm getting three or four a day. Haven't been stupid enough to open the attachment yet, fortunately.

I received one just the other day!  I am currently writing letters with a girl in Tijuana and I received an email from her asking about the need advice thing which included an attachment like you described.

First I found it unusual that she could write me in english.  And her name was'nt signed at the bottom of the note.  So I scanned the Document and a virus threat was detected.  I deleted the email immediately.  I wrote her back asking why she sent me that email/virus, but now I think that the virus might of invaded her computer and sent itself to me.  I havent heard from her in 4 days, and thats probably because she does'nt have a computer anymore.

Be careful!

This virus was caught by my Norton Utilities and was described as "W32.Sircam.Worm@mm" and was automatically deleted. It has been making it's rounds in various newsgroups so please do not open any .doc.bat file (or anything suspicious) until you have updated your AntiVirus def's and checked your system out. Just an FYI.

I got one yesterday, from somebody I never heard of, forget his name. Text of the message was "XXXXX is my name and Boxing is my game" with a .bat attachment. I deleted it without opening it.
