Title: Greetings again Post by: Dean on July 24, 2001, 04:00:00 AM Just a point that I'd like to throw out to the board....
As you may know I am married to Paty, a native of Bogota. Paty's sister is interested in being married to an American. Last week a guy she'd been corresponding to to showed up in Bogota with presents, promises and letters from his mother.... He was supposedly seeking marraige....many "sincere" conversations with Paty's sister....
Today, he was supposed to visit the house for lunch. The guy never showed...or even called to cancel.... I think its important to remember to be respectful in similar situations....Don't be the a--hole from the US.... I think its RUDE to arrange to MEET THE FAMILY OF THE WOMAN YOU"VE ASKED TO MARRY YOU and then not show up or call.... Yo Dude.... Title: Re: Greetings again EXACTO! We americans should be offering these women something better or forget it. Everyguy who goes to colombia for a wife is an ambassador and should be a complete gentleman, kind, polite, responsible When I found my Maria I called the other girls to thank them and wish them well something they really appreciated. What, this guy thinks your sister-in-law has no feelings? That is just shameful....but the shame is on HIM, not your family....I certainly hope you've been proving to the family that we're not ALL that way. Hey, and while you're at it, why not have you wife find out who the other girls is and give a a call, she probably doesn't know what he did and she deserves a warning. Dean, Unfortunatly another Ricardo Cabeza has soiled the floor in the room that others want to occupy. There is truth in the saying "what goes around comes around". It might be interesting to be there when it comes around to Ricardo. Yea man I've seen this happen. It's the embodiment of rudeness, insensitivity, callousness, selfishness, and cowardice. Let me see...what word did I miss...anyway this thing happens...it's hard to prevent. If the guy is in an agency the owner can probably get him to make amends..to at least own up to his discourteous behavior and apologize. One just doesn't insult the family this way.....especially dear MOM! Believe me....I'm no innocent lamb in this regard...I've had my chimes rung for similar misdeeds in bygone days! There were always consequences...because in the Latin culture this is a huge insult. If there's any man in the family nearby it's better to take it on the lam and disappear! Some general comments... Outside of the Ugly American syndrome and rudeness, I feel like these guys are really playing with fire. I have heard things like this time and time again. People don't seem to realize they are in COLOMBIA...ya know, one of the most violent countries in the world right now by any measure. Life is not held in high regard by many down there. While they may not be the majority, they are there indeed. I go out of my way not to piss anyone off while I'm there. I know what thoughts would be going thru my mind if some Frenchy, for example, did that to my sister, or friend, or mom or whatever. I would want a piece of their hide in a big way. You don't think Colombian males feel the same way? What if they were involved in the dark side of Colombia? I mean, the whole family knows what the guy looks like and where he is staying. One of these days, they will get their comeuppance, but I doubt we will hear about it because he will be wearing a 'Colombian Necktie'. Diggit guys? Are you saying guys should not treat women that way because they might suffer some consequences? I would hope a guy wouldn't act that way because he was a decent human being and respected others feelings, not because he was worried about saving his "hide". To me that is like a guy that doesn't cheat on his wife because he is afraid to get caught. Right result, wrong reason. To me the damage is done when has the desire or intent to do something wrong, whether they have the "guts" to do it or not. BTW, A Colombian Necktie is when the cut your throat and pull your tongue out thru the slit and let it hang down...hence the name. I don't think it's a very pleasant experience... Mike |
