Title: Colombian boondoggle Post by: buzzy on July 26, 2001, 04:00:00 AM There's an interesting story today, "General Arrest A Test For Colombia," by Jared Kotler, Associated Press. Popular Retired General Del Rio, forced into retirement by President Pastrana in 1999, was arrested Monday at his Bogota home. He will face human rights violations in a civilian court. This is a first for this kind of Military public censure. He allegedly gave Army support to the Right-Wing paramilitaries against Rebel guerrillas and Rebel sympathizers. And there's another interesting character, a former highly decorated Colombian Officer, Carlos Velasquez, who was forced into early retirement for whistle-blowing on General Del Rio in 1996. Velasquez now teaches at a Bogota university. He also worked with the CIA several years ago in breaking up the Cali cartel. He's accused by the Retired General of being a Rebel sympathizer and running guns to the Rebels. Velasquez says the charges are ridiculous. Intriguing and interesting news!!
