Title: Book review: Killing Pablo (Escobar)
Post by: Hamlet on June 17, 2001, 04:00:00 AM
I just finished reading "Killing Pablo" by Mark Bowden, also the author of "Black Hawk Down" (Somolia ambush of Delta Force copter.)  It is a factual account of the search for and killing of Pablo Escobar, a man once named the worst international terrorist.  His unparalled violence which nearly destoyed the state of Colombia motivated the Colombian executive and judicial branches, the Colombian police and special forces, the Colombian Army, a Colombian paramilitary group, the CIA, FBI, DEA, State Department, Army intelligence and finally Delta Force to find and kill him.

The book also summarizes recent Colombian history and gives details about the workings of local, departmental and federal government, as well as the character, thoughts and attitudes of Colombians.  The author had obviously interviewed many Colombians and many US people while doing his research.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in a riveting but tragic story and some recent history of Colombia.

However I have read the book by Garcia Marquez, News of a Kidnapping. Basically, it covers the same time frame.
