A friend of mine here in the Philippines, that previously lived in Thailand, intoduced me to a webpage about Thailand a few days ago.

http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/index.htm

If you click on "Readers Submissions"  there are about 1000 stories submitted from 100's of people all over the world relating their adventures in dealing with Thailand.  Maybe 50% of the stories deal with the bars, but the other 50% are very informative regarding foreigners experiences relating to  Thai culture and relationships, working and  teaching in Thailand and much more.
My friend had been trying to explain to me why he would never live in Thailand again, and now I understand......

Just talked to my ex-brother-in-law today (wife's sister's ex husband) He's a merchant marine who spends two or three months on ships, just long enough to get enough money to spend three to six months in Phuket Thailand, where he drinks and whores all the maney away, then flies back to the states to hop on another ship. Been doing it for many years now. He broke again and waiting down at the union hall for a ship. Sometimes I think about the day to day grind of corporate life, with businesses on the side, here in the city and wonder just which one of us has it figured out.

I'll drop by that site - sounds interesting.
