Title: WHAT??!!!
Post by: dennis64 on September 19, 2002, 04:00:00 AM
I'm trying to change my wife's status and a few things just have me baffled!  First of all the price for submitting the Change of Status (form I-485) costs $255!!! Secondly, they're asking to submit several other forms with it which includes a Medical form that requests an examination for every disease ever known to man (including leprosy, tubercolosis and  bouts of insanity).  My question is: what the heck was the purpose of the medical exam at St. Luke's if they have to come here and take the same thing over again (which will probably bankrupt me since she's not covered under medical insurance yet) when they come here?  Somebody please give me insight on this because I haven't seen any complaints posted on it yet.

Did somebody tell you that this was going to be easy and inexpensive? If so, they lied to you.

One of the First things that you should do is make sure that your wife has medical insurance. That’s Your responsibility!

If your wife came over on a K-1, then don’t sweat the AOS medical stuff because she already had her medical exam at St. Luke’s. Unless of course she made the choice not to get all of her shots over there, in which case she will have to do it here.

You were supposed to look into all of these things BEFORE you decided to take on the responsibilities of a wife. Marriage is not cheap or easy, especially when it involves a foreign spouse :-)

Note: A lot of guys insist on doing a fiancée visa because it seems to be the easiest and the fastest. What they often don’t consider is the rest of the process that they have to finish up when the wife arrives. If you marry overseas, you don’t have to worry about all this AOS junk when she gets here. Just another point to consider up front…

Also, DON'T FORGET TO APPLY FOR ADVANCE PAROLE!!!

Thanks for the info but understand - my problem isn't a matter of taking on the responsibility or expenses of having a  wife - it's questioning what appeared to be redundancy of charges and procedures required in allowing me to have my wife here.  Thanks again for the info - but you need to bark up somebody else's tree when it comes to questioning accepting responsibilities.

Well, excuse me then. But it sure did sound like you were complaining about the cost of filing for AOS, like you had no idea what was expected of you until now.

Peace,

If I remember right, all she has to do is show the results of the medical exam she had in her country.

Thanks Lori!  They scared me with that one - she suffered enough from the St. Luke's experience! :)
