Don, I have been to Davao twice this year already... once for two weeks, and the second for 4 days. I felt totally safe, day or night, but I would say to your friend: always be vigilent. There is always a risk anywhere you go there, especially if you look like a westerner. As far as I can tell, the most recent kidnappings have been against Koreans, Chinese and rich Filipinos. It is quite possible that the kidnappers may be afraid to take westerners for fear of reprisal from the American troops stationed there. I will be going back next month.
