Just got rid of Outlook Express and IE. It's amazing what lengths Microsoft will go to to keep all your surfing history and emails hidden somewhere; they never really delete it, they just hide it so anyone who knows where to look for it can find it. I always deleted 'Temporary Internet Files' from the browser but that only deletes a small portion of the directory. When I booted into DOS and did a 'Deltree Tempor~1' it took a full 10 MINUTES to delete the tree! I went to that "f---Microsoft" site and read the instructions about how to delete the stored filed in your computer. But I'm not a "computer type" person. Do you think it would be safe for someone like me to use these instruction and do it for myself? How dangerous is it? I don't want to destroy my computer. You could lose some stored passwords if you delete the Cookies folder. Deleting the History folder will remove the entries in the site history pulldown list. Also, I think this is where 'previously clicked' info is stored to show a different color for PL board posts that you've already looked at. Deleting the Tempor~1 directory (Temporary Internet Files) shouldn't hurt anything. Same for the Windows\Temp directory. Old emails on newer Win OSs are stored in .dbx files. The 'Sent Items' and 'Deleted' can archive a lot of stuff. The primary goal is to prevent pirated software although they have yet to get legislation passed to allow the information they collect. But now MPAA (movie/music industry) is starting to attempt to force ISPs to gather the info on who is sharing large files and copyrighted softwares. Some ISP's can't afford the court battle so they are doing it. Just some of the other things I have learned lately.... 1) If you have WindowsXP and a webcam/mic - be aware that I have talked to hackers who say they can turn them on and "spy" on you. I am not sure thats true but it scares me senseless. It's a great program. I think it was Don who posted it a while back. It found one spyware program on my system when I first ran it some months ago, but I gave it to a guy in work who couldn't figure out why his hard drive was chugging away all the time and he found 21 spyware programs running on his system! you'll see I made a similar post a few months ago. It took thirteen minutes for mine. I was sure my comuter was ruined but I waited it out and it finally came back. I also deleted "find fast" all the histories, caches, QM and compress my e-mails routinely. I now run Zonealarm behind a router, CookieWall, Ad-Subtract and McAfee. I have not been able to find an e-mail program I like that does as good as job as M$ Outlook though. Do you have a suggestion? BTW, Netscape/Real Player/WinAmp is worse when it comes to "spyware". All those "AOL" companies are involved in profiling their users. Never, never, never load "Real One" player. I have seen it crash several machines. I also recommend Ad-Aware. I used it on a friends computer 2 weeks ago and found 183 cookie/spyware/malware program/files. Slowed his boot and internet connection to near nothing - now mere moments. Yes, I saw your post. For the past year I've been running OnTrack firewall and Cookiepal but I liked IE so I didn't switch. But when I saw that site and then saw that ALL my emails were being saved, that was it, no more Outlook Express and IE. Six months ago I started using Ad Aware, Popup Stopper and a HOSTS file to fake out the ad sites. Thanks for the info on Real Player/AOL. I just installed Netscape but now that I see all the AOL stuff in there I'm thinking about going to Opera like Jeff. Jim Title: Re: Re: archives... Bear, It's a text file in the C:\Windows directory with a list of server names and addresses that are supposed to be found on your system. But if you put a bunch of ad server names in there (doubleclick, adsmart, etc.)all mapped to your IP address, then these sites are effectively blocked. The system will look for these ad servers locally (and quickly) and not find them, instead of asking your ISP to find them. I downloaded a hosts file that already had a bunch of these ad servers in there. It's probably time for me to download a more up-to-date one. Do they have clams in the PI? I'm guessing they have what the Japanese call Asari and what is called here "Manila Clams" here: smaller ridged shelled, multi colored clams. They're not nearly as good as the Eastern littlenecks and "piss" clams you have up there. I sure miss them. Had some FedExed in from Maine last year along with a couple of live lobsters! Sally loves them but I don't know if they have an abundance of little clams in the PI or not. All I've seen are the giant clams while diving, about 18 inches wide!
