Title: good book Post by: civi68 on May 30, 2005, 04:00:00 AM A good book I just read is "Darkness at Dawn," a book about life in Russia. Many say that the MOB business day's are numbered but as this book indicates, things are not that great over there.

I think as long as inequality exists in the world, in terms of both wealth and civilised democratic society, there will be a MOB scene of some kind, although the geographical focus might change (in fact it already has; I remember when the Czech Republic was where it was happening, and Russia was still beyond comprehension!) But as far as the FSU scene dyiing off, I think the events of the last couple of days have set that process back almost indefinitely. Countries like Ukraine have seen their brave new world in Europe, and elected their leaders on that ticket; but following the French "non" to the EU Constitution, and the probable same response from the Netherlands, it looks like we can forget about further enlargement of Europe for the foreseeable future. I feel sorry for the likes of Ukraine in this respect, and especially countries like Romania which had begun their accession talks, but Old Europe has decided that it doesn't want to be part of a superstate equally shared by, and overburdened and overrun by New Europe. Ironically the main bugbear of France regarding further enlargement has been the prospect of Turkey coming on board, with its Islamic implications and 80 million population, rather than the likes of Ukraine. |
