Title: Want to tell your story?
Post by: Naz on March 28, 2005, 05:00:00 AM
Dear users,

My name is Nazanin and I'm a journalist and student in New York City.  I'm
producing a radio documentary about dating and marriage through the
internet...how does this process work?  Why did you decide to look for an
Eastern European or Russian women?  What was your experience like?

I know these are very personal issues but I'm hoping that someone will want
to tell their story...to help people understand what this process is really like.

If you are in the New York City area...and have dated or married a woman
through agencies that connect American men with Eastern European
women...or if you've gone on a tour or are leaving for a tour...and want to talk
about it...I'd be grateful if you would respond to this post.

Sorry to take your time...thank you for reading this post...I hope to hear from
you.

-Nazanin

I suspect one reason you have received flip responses to your query is that the men who post here are keenly aware of how this issue is treated in the media.

Sometimes it is treated fairly, but often it is treated unfairly and slanted to make the participants appear as desperate losers.

Naturally the posters here have no idea what your agenda is, and any words of assurance you might post here would be just...words.

Nah, I'm gonna write my own book when the final chapter is complete. It's going to be a combination comedy/drama/horror!

...This guy seems to be focusing on "success" stories. In deference to his listeners I hope he widens his perspective and shows the dark side of this racket. On the plus side the least he could do is try and find a couple who has been together more a few years. Anything less is smoke and mirrors.

I don't pay people to talk to me. The only incentive would be your
wanting to tell your story.

Thanks for writing,

Dear Patrick,

I'm not really sure why you took the time to post a fake reply.  I'm
sincere in my request....and I'm not doing this story with any
preconceived ideas about meeting women in other countries and
getting married.

I've studied marriage and I did my masters thesis on
marriage...and believe me....what you guys are doing isn't very
weird....it's just relatively new.

Anyway....thank you for responding....it gives me an idea of the
sensitivity of this issue.

How would I get in touch with you?  Can we speak before you
arrive in New York City with your wife?

You're quite right, marriage is not a "college course", but as I'm
sure you know, you can pretty much study anything in graduate
school which is where I am right now.

My parents had an arranged marriage and that's where my interest
in marriage comes from.

If you would e-mail me and let me know whether or not we can
speak before you arrive in new york city, it would be a great help.

My e-mail address is nrafsanjani@nospam.com....

Thank you for responding,
Naz

Naz, if you want to understand the process, read the boards covering the subject matter.  More than enough has been posted on it to fill a library.  This also isn't "relatively" new.  My dad married a forigen women (my mom) when he was a young man overseas.  Want to interview him?  They've been happily married for over 50 years.  Of course he didn't have the internet back than, but it doesn't take a moron to realize the internet just made meeting people from different countries available to anyone with internet access.  You're not the first (and definately won't be the last) to come to this board wanting to do a story on a subject matter that has already been reported on via national newspapers, television and other forms of media.  Get original and find something new worthwhile to research and write about that might benefit humanity rather than rehash old news.

Dear Deden,

Thank you for your suggestions.  Congratulations to your parents
on 50 years! That's incredible!

I actually have spent a lot of time reading the message boards.
I've interviewed a couple of people who own companies that help
American men meet women in Eastern Europe and Russia.  But
since this is a radio piece, I need actual human voices to speak on
tape....that's why I posted here.

This topic may not be original but I think it is worthwhile and
interesting and I've actually never heard a radio piece on it.  If you
have heard one, please direct me to it if you have a moment.

Although I'm sure it would be lovely to interview your mom and
dad, I don't think it would fit in to this piece...as my piece is quite
specific.  If you or someone you know did use an agency, or met a
woman through the internet...in Eastern Europe or Russia...and
has a successful relationship or marriage...I'd be interested in
inerviewing them.

Anyway, sorry to ramble....thanks for taking the time to post.

Naz

Truly, if you are going to do such a report, why not do a comprehensive report that compares these groups.

1) American Men who seek domestic women via the internet.
2) American Men who have married domestic women they met through the internet.
3) American Women who seek domestic men through the internet
4) American Women who married domestic men they met through the internet.
5) American Men who seek international women via the internet.
6) American Men who married international women they met through the internet.
7) American Women who seek international men through the internet.
8) American Women who have married international men through the internet.

I'll bet dimes to doughnuts that the mens and womens reasons and experiences with internet dating in these groups are basically the same (can't find the right person in my own back yard, yep it worked, no it failed, I was scammed, etc.) if the sample size is statistically valid!  Anything less is really only an attempt to create a newsworthy radio show for its viewers which is not representative of internet dating (whether you label it as domestic or international internet dating) and might as well be another onesided Jerry Springer ppv show.

Ya know, Howard Stern needs to go Ukraine and do a on the air live spot, man talk about a rating bonanza...

If he could hook up with somebody like Maxium Magazine, as the russian ladies just might be offended if they used Playboy magazine and were just looking for the sexual angle on the story.
