Title: Social security card - before or after marria Post by: Bobby Orr on November 07, 2004, 05:00:00 AM For you recently married guys who brought in a girl on a fiance visa - when is the time to get a girl a social security number and card etc., before the actual marriage or after marriage? When will it be issued and by whom? I am going to start looking and calling myself, but I figured I'd ask to see if some of you married guys had different experiences or know how things have changed recently etc. Thanks,

It’s much easier if she gets the card before marriage and later changes the name to her married name, like RfB did. For K-1 visa holders, she is eligible for an SSN if she applies within the first 76 days after arrival. After that, she will need an EAD card from CIS. With the SSN, she can legally work for the first 90 days without paying for an Employment Authorization Doc (EAD). She can apply for an EAD when she files for Adjustment of Status if she wants to work. To apply for an SS Card, she should go to any local SSA office soon after arrival with her passport, I-94, and birth certificate. If you run into a SSA employee who tells you she needs an EAD first, ask for a stupidvisor and refer them to RM 00203.500. http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500 Ray Title: Thanks for the thorough explanation Post by: Bobby Orr on November 08, 2004, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Before, posted by Ray on Nov 7, 2004

We found that it was less problems to get the SS# before we got married, then change the name afterwards. It elimated problems in creating joint bank/credit card accounts that you will end up needing for the various INS proof requirements, and of course the IRS filings at the end of the year.
