My fiancee and I have met twice in London. She was very fearful that she would be refused a visa to visit London but I encouraged her to try. I provided documentation that showed that she had confirmed reservations in English hotels. She was very pleased with the treatment that she received and was easily granted a 6 month visa. She lives in Moscow so it was not inconvenient for her to go for an interview at the UK Embassy. Wish it could be as easy for her to get a US visa. Citizens from the new EU countries can work and live wherever they please in the EU. No visa is necessary for travel but you still need to present your passport. In fact I met some Poles who were claiming unemployment benefits in England. It is still difficult for the ordinary Russians to get visas to England, although businessmen have no such problems. Over 100,000 Russians are now in England. Most of them are wealthy. They cite kidnapping as the main reason for leaving Russia, even though i suspect their wealth were ill gotten as well. The UK had a temporary work permit scheme for seasonal farm workers during summer, about 5000 Ukrainians went over every year. I'm not sure if this is still on or scrapped since they can now get farm workers from eastern Europe. The EU is keen to include Ukraine and possibly Belarus in the EU. Problems are... these countries must meet some economic targets, democratic govs and overcome opposition from Russia. The easiest way for a young Russian to get a visa for England is to apply for a student's visa to study English etc. |
