I have been writing to a woman in Kherson for some time; always in English.  Elena is fluent, but I wanted to make an extra effort and downloaded a trial copy of a relatively expensive software product.  I wrote a letter in English and in Russian with the software.  Part of the letter was recounting my experience in Court that day when the Judge was giving me a hard time about my tie (just messing with me :-))  The story ended with my removing the tie and putting it in my briefcase (to the judge's amusement).  She told me to forget about the software.  It had translated "tie" to "relationship"  So the story ended with my putting a bad relationship in my briefcase and living happily ever after.  I promptly deleted the software.

Elena also insisted I send her a scan of the tie and she agreed with the judge.  I thought it was kinda stylish.  Oh well.

I still have yet to see a good Russian/English translation program.

Hi:Im shocked and somewhat surpised in this day and age,No body on here and another board has pooled there resoures
and came up with translation software That can relate to written words.The lingo that will be used hear in the states.I would Go out on a limb and say MOST if not all
Translation software would not properly Translate a such word as "calling the kettle black" or even "dont throw rock's through glass house's".Maybe software should at least
hit on that a tad bit.even if the girl some intend to meet
May have slangs in it also.(if there the age rangs of 18-24)I rember seeing not to Long ago
a book on "brooklynese" It was  but something that may have  been only a joke to us,could turn into a bussiness venture for someone.A software program thats teachs words,written and spoken.I know there are some that are pretty afective and some that just plain suck.Lets
take for example That learn how to use pc on Tv we all see
Maybe something like that? even something interactive
On the computer,or tv!( i know most fsu women dont have the Tech we do)I undertsand Its a bit of a struggle to work,worry about your love one in fsu and such and Go through the struggles of every day life here.I would hope to think there is someone out hear on this Board whom can make it rich,Then again This would put a damper on agecenys trying to make there most cash and thats on Translation!!

Russian grammar doen't correspond well with English. And our vocabulary has too many double meanings. That's why programs have problems. I've been told there are some very good programs for western european languages. I used prompt(and my wife still uses) extensively but you need to really check what's being translated. In the long run learning Russian, even if only a bit, is probably worth it. But the best advice I have is when writing to Russians, keep things very simple! Then it'll usually translate clearly. I've learned that English is very ambiguous where russian is often more precise in it's meanings. That can cause headaches to. Look up "go" or "put" in an english-russian dictionary.

If you speak Russian, be very careful how you pronounce words...I asked my now ex wife if she knew how to swim...seems I mis-prounounced the word and actually asked her if she knew how to spit. One letter off can do a lot of damage :-)

Thanks.  That is really funny.  I am using Rosetta Stone software to try to get at least a minimal grasp, but it is going very slowly.

As for spitting, years ago I dated a punk rocker and that woman could spit better and further than any man I know. :-)

Just for what it's worth, I used Resetta Stone to learn Russian. It was great!!! Just learn to pronounce the letters right!!!

I like the software very much ... Will I ever get past "old yellow car" "young woman with long black hair" and numbers to more useful things like "Hello"  "How are you" or "No sir, I am not a terrorist, this is an I-Pod"?

Hi Gemen,

Yup, civil court.  I wonder what Elena would think of kicking a relationship to the curb.  I don't know if that is a well known slang phrase over there.

Hi Craig: The reason why i say civill court,(MY experince only) working Part time as A computer tech and having to go into the nassau county court house's(when i lived in NY)
That most Criminal judges seem to be straight foward and No jokeing around.Ive have met a many of civil judges whom were funny men themselves and woman happened to be very funny!

Hi,

Even the civil court judges are usually pretty humorless.  However, I am before this same judge very often and he loves to mess with me at the end of appearances. He is still, however, very tough and fair.

Hi: I knew some are hard and some are just really pains.
I guess everyone loves to have there pc fixed and such!
My question to you is this:How come There so ornery and
Tough and hard? It's funny cause No one told them to sell
there law practices and get apointed to be a judge.
You will make more money owning a law practice then sitting on the bench,and at that stage of one's life,I hope They are making That money per year(what a judge makes)In there practices,if not more.I never understood why most If not all are pretty humourless?
I guess tottal power,Tottal surpeme being.ego boster?

I cannot begin to guess what motivates a person to become a judge, secure income?, power?, dedication to the law?  Heck, many a day passes when I can't guess what motivates me to practice law, except "if you wanna eat, you gotta work".

That is the problem with any type of translation, machine or human. What you mean to say, might not always be what it turns out that she hears when converted to Russian, or the same thing the other direction. When I sent letters to my (now) wife, I always used 'Promt' to translate into Russian, but I always included the English at the bottom, so if there was any confusion to what was said, the original of what was meant was on the same letter.

Thanks.  Prompt was, in fact, the offending software :-)  Elena wants no part of it.  She told me to just write English -- period. :-)
