I was planning on it. I wanted to do like Bill said. Ride for a day or two and spend a few days in an area and then continue to the next place and do it over. But I got married and my plans have been put on hold for now. The woman search part hopefully forever. There is a small chance that I might take it in June on my next visit.

My wife has travelled from Vladivostok to Moscow and ST. Petersburg several times on the train. It's a seven day trip from Moscow to Vladivostok. Her Uncle just visited her and her mother and took the train from Omsk. If you have specific questions I might be able to get her to answer them. But she won't write a general trip report.

Send me the dough and I'll go there for a whole month or more and scope the train situation out.  I haven't got much of a job.  I can cut and run in an instance....

Besides I'd like to check out some of that Ukrainian steam engines and what's left in Russia.

I have been thinking about it for a long time but I have never done yet. I have some books and a story written on the Internet. They give many hints, cautions and interesting episodes. Vladivostock-Moskva-Leningrad-Helsinki railway route used to be a quite popular and cheap way from the Far East to Europe for many Hippies and Japanese youngsters.

When a person takes this trip, is it necessary to get the necessary visas in the departing and arrival countries.

If your into long trips, this is one for ya... If you thought the flight over was long..lol.

I think this would be a interesting trip if you could stop and get off at some of the destinations along the way and go inland.

I think it'd be a photographer dream trip.   By stopping and scouting the places out.  It'd be neat if you can get a girl in every town... must be that sailor in me rubbing out of me.

Heck come back in 5 or 10 years and all the little kids will look like you. lol.

Travel network.  Why ride a train that rockin' back and forth and going click-clack and be subject to 7 days of living in a small compartment!

Plus, this whole pursuit of foreign women is one big adventure, and it seems like a natural progression.
I guess it's up to me to "sacrifice" myself and experience a once in a lifetime adventure and maybe, I'll write a book about it, or at least post here.

This isn't like rapid transit system where it's super smooth and zips along.  I've haven't traveled it, though I have travel the Amtrak on the City of New Orleans... I'd swear the train came of the tracks a few times as it sure was bumpy.  Kinda like your riding along on the cross ties.

Plus, it's like a roller coaster, up a steep hill, bouncing along mind you and then down the grade.  Course, I've yet to see a double stack berthing on a russian train, but an Amtrak that's where the swaying really gets to you... Flying South on the upper Mississippi Delta, rolling through sleepy little downs which only action is train a going by.

Take an American train, first, before you weather a 7 day ride...sheez, I road that beast for 12 hours and was ready to get off.

That's why nobody is taking the Slow train to Siberia.
Imagine getting diarrea on trip like that...you'd never for get it...remember, we're use to eating foods with preservatives in them, which stop you up...over their you be the regular guy.

The ride between Prague and Odessa by rail "can" be quite interesting ;)   Been there done that one. That clickity-clack must have a simular effect as the sound/vibration of a Harley----if you know what I mean :)

Is I'm bashing the Amtrak, any they have welded rail, their is very limited clik-clak only in the yards and at some switches.

Now, I think you'd have a much better time riding the Harleys throught Ukraine and stopping and asking for directions from all the girls along the way...

Maybe Jack can rent us some Harley's.

Bill, apparently you have never actually traveled thru the country in Ukraine or you would realize that your suggestion is a huge stretch of your imagination.
Besides, with a fine PYT beside you-----why would you want the hassle?

I'd like to see a road trip one of these days.  I wonder if anyone has seen any video documentaries on traveling the back roads of Ukraine and Russia ?
