Title: what about the west????
Post by: europete on March 27, 2004, 05:00:00 AM
Reading the lower post about the First Dream upcoming trip in May, and knowing of the other major agencies tours in Ukraine, I wonder why most agencies seem to go to the eastern cities of Ukraine for their parties/socials/meetings and not to the western part of the country. Anyone have any ideas as to why that is?

Those of Russian background are primarily in eastern Ukraine plus Odesa and Crimea.

The Russian ladies are much more anxious to get out than are Ukrainian ladies.

There is some tension building between the ethnic groups.

You can speak Russian throughout Kyiv and parts east and south, but it will get you some dirty looks in western Ukraine.

Yorkman- just curious what you base this assesment on?
*shrugs*

for what its worth-
the country is divided east/west
not by ukrainians/Russians
or way of life..
but by the language commonly spoken in daily life.

east its russian, though they certainly know ukranian.

in the west its ukranian,
though they certainly know Russian..

your average Ukranian woman in Kiev ,
odessa , kharkov , kherson , poltova, vinnetsa ,kriv rog, zaporazia ,lungunsk, donetsk, dnepropetrovsk..

is still a ukranian person and considers that her nationality..
just like a UW from Lviv?

she wont consider herself Russian unless her parents where Russian ( a possibilty)

anyway i dont see a Ukranian woman from Russian speaking part of Ukraine, which includes the capitol of Kiev,
as any more anxious to leave than a ukrainian woman from the west city of lviv or others..??

in fact quite the opposite is true depending on the exact city and conditions.

as far as ther MOV industry being a bit more situated in the eastern part of the country..
a close look just reveals agencies are located in higher population cities ,, more of which reside in the eastern part of the country.

the larger cities in the western part also have many agencies and tour groups going there..

also crimia as a popular destination /holiday spot
south.

Basically the agencies are where the population is..

and where western men have ease of traveking or want of tourism(holiday)

i dont think it has anything to do with what
the Ukrainian woman speaks as a common daily language.

I agree with your analysis on all of the points you covered.  My wife is Ukrainian from the Crimea. Her father is Russian and her mother is Ukrainian.  She considers herself to be Ukrainian and she tells those who ask that she is Ukrainian. She speaks Ukrainian a little bit but not fluently. She's not really too fond of mother Russia (the country) as Ukraine suffered heavily under Moscow control during the Soviet era.  Actually I just call her my little Soviet girl which makes her giggle.
