In our search for suitable companions it may improve the chances of getting permission for them to immigrate to USA if they are nurses.

Just heard a report on the radio of a Doctor who changed her professional qualifications to "nurse," because US Immigration is giving out "green cards," to nurses.

There is a severe shortage of nurses in our health care system.  Apparently "homeland security" measures are somewhat relaxed for that profession.  It makes sense, for one of the most essential resources required for our national defense is the availability of skilled medical personnel.  

I assume that in addition to being a qualified nurse the applicant would need English language skills.

I am reminded of the story of the English Midlands School district that recruited experienced Math. and Science teachers from St. Petersburg to fill a desperate need in their schools.  The administrators were concerned that the students would have difficulty with the Russian accents and would not accept the new teachers.  At the end of the semester the students were surveyed to measure the acceptance of the Russian teachers.  The evaluations were universally excellent.  The students were delighted that the new teachers were very knowledgeable about the subjects they were teaching.  "They knew their stuff." Remarkably the students expressed preferrence for the new teachers over their former native born English teachers because the Russians spoke "better English."

one of the local (South Florida) state universities (FAU, I think, but it could be FIU) has a program to take foreign trained doctors and train them to be nurses.  While it is a step down from being a doctor in their homeland, it is often better than what they might other wise be doing.

A program like this might be of interest to someone bringing over someone with a medical background.  Hopefully, it's not the only program like this in the country.
