...and have for years. Connections are good, CS people speak Russian, never had a whiff of a problem. Bout $.10/min to Moscow I think.

I'd avoid the dial around services like 10-10-220 or 10-10-321.  Some have great domestic rates, but their international rates can be very high.  I have had pretty good success both personally and professionally with pre-paid calling cards to Eastern/Western Europe.  I've recommended http://pointme.to/expresspin before, like the search engine on their page.

Good luck!

Yeah, that first bill is a real eye openner. Mine was over $200 but you live and you learn. I've been using cards for the last three years and the rates vary along with the service.

I've had cards that cost $0.06/min to Moscow but to call Kyiv is $0.22/min (with good connection and quality). I've also had cards (Med. & Ca.) that cost only $0.10/min to Kyiv but bad connections that cost you 1-2 minutes without even speaking or poor call quality and disconnect after 7 or 8 minutes. It was almost impossible to get a connection on the weekends.

I found a new card (service seems to degrade the longer a card is on the market and more people use it) called "Hello Europe" for only $0.11/min. with great sound quality and always connects on the first try. We'll see how long it lasts.

He's got the best info.

Then again the cta cards (ie, gold oro etc) to nowhere russia and beyond are cheap and save big bucks over any 1010 service I've dealt with lately.

haha!

Each plan on the dial arounds have their own charges.  Sometimes it's a monthly charge, sometimes a call minimum, sometimes it's minimum usage.  And the plans differ on countries and cities within the countries.  So, as others have suggested, shop around and fully understand the "fine print" and see which plan suits your specific needs.

I, like Oscar, use 10-15-335.  10 minute minimum (so it's nice if you know when the party you are calling is at home) plus an 11% tax/charge.  The disconnects were common about a year ago but now they are non-existent.  The voice quality is very good.

Good luck and have fun.

We have been using www.Discall.com for the last year plus, and the rates are excellent, 3.9 cents to St Pete, but the quality has been going down the last two months, but not enough to shop elsewere yet.

I have used the 10-15-335 quite a few times. It's a 10 minute minimum and 17 cents to Ukraine, no special or monthly fees etc..
Here is an address for some of the popular dial-arounds-

http://10-10phonerates.com/baltic_russia.html

There are many phone cards available for cheaper prices but I have not found them very reliable etc.. for calling Dnepropetrovsk.  They may be fine for Kiev, I don't know..
You can find a lot of phone cards at this address-

www.masterbell.com

I have mostly been using World Discount Communications (WDT)..  It's not as cheap as phone cards, but the quality is excellent.  No monthly fees etc..  They send a seperate bill to your home-

1-888-353-0808

Hope this helps..
